    300 Tdi Cyl Head Issue

Well, today being Christmas day I opened my (self bought) present. A 300 Tdi D1.
When I say opened I mean opened up. Never being one to actually buy a fully functional working Land Rover I got a 'real good deal' on slightly used D1. By slightly used I mean overheating & pressurising the cooling system.
The source of the problem was obvious

The P gasket was just about non existant and was a paper gasket !!

This presumably led to the creation of the unique 'two piece' thermostat.

I assume the over pressure from the leaky cylinder head/gasket caused this to fail.

Pulling the head off I found this

Head gasket blown to water jacket between cyls 2 & 3

    Here's the head

    And block

Tomorrows exercise will be to clean it all up, run a straight edge over it and with a bit of luck (fingers crosed) get out of it all for a top end gasket kit.

But the bit I'm having a problem figuring out is this

Why is the push rod hole (No.1 cylinder inlet) in the head like this ???

Eeek! When they break cam belts and pushrods bend, they get awfully kinked at times, but I haven't seen that sort of damage before. I would say the head would have to have been removed to remove the rod, too

    Thats my only theory, too

    A Good Project

If you need a new head consider getting a ported one from the UK pore power torque and some say economy, if i had even more money I would also send it to jet coatings or swan racing coating in Sydney. Excuse me while I bask In my delusions of grandeur. Every body has done a head gasket or two and the
300tdi was known for it too.

New head and gasket at least. Your block might be ok, but from my experience, you will find that there will be cracks around the injector holes, possibly also around the glow plug holes. Head will be too soft to get machined and too warped. I had the exact same issue. New turners flowed head complete with valves and gaskets delivered for around $900.

This mornings exercise has been to clean up the head/block and see what I've got.

The good news is the block appears to be fine, no warping/cracking etc , but the head is a bit worse for wear, not unexpected and allowed for in the purchase price.

I guess this is what Luke means by cracks around the injector/glow plug holes and the casting is pretty porous as well.

To top it off there's an 8 thou warp in the head.

    So do I

a/. chuck the head and get a new one ?
b/. get the head machined and hope for the best ?
c/. get a thicker head gasket, stick it on with Hylomar and overtighten the 'centre' head bolts ?

The whole vehicle cost me $1200 and is in pretty good nic. The paint work is faded on the roof, the bonnet's been repainted (badly) and mechanically everything works. The only unroadworthy items are a worn upper panhard rod bush and rear washer 'protusion' missing. Doesn't even leak oil or power steering fluid.

Probably need to get the head hardened tested, before getting it machined. Cost me about $120 back in march. Was too soft between 2-3 cyl but about the samp amount of warp as yours. New head would be money well spent. Look at it as a late XMAS present to yourself! If you get a new head, do the timing belt as well that way you almost have a newish engine. Did a compression test after the work and got 450psi each cylinder. Nothing stated in w/shop manual as to the min psi but there is a listing for discrepancies between the cylinders.Have a pressure test kit if you need to borrow. Pm me if you like. Can post it depending on where you are.
Car runs great now, almost feels new. A little louder in the diesel sound, might need to revisit valve clearances.

I agree with Luke, the money would be well spent getting a new head, the cost of a big failure later could take the bottom end etc with it. Now is not the time to 'save' as you got the whole vehicle at a good $.

As stated Turners are a good option, get them to supply gaskets and head bolts too.

    And Luke, 450psi is excellent.

    All done.
All up including cylinder head with valves, springs etc gasket kit and new head bolts came to around AUD $875 including delivery which I don't reckon is too bad.

Thanks gentlemen for the timely advice and thankyou Luke for the offer of the compression tester. I've got several comp testers but I don't know if they go this high.

Now to check the timing gear..................................

While you're in there, to be on the safe side, you might as well replace the 'P' gasket too.
