Don't forget LandCruisers are well known for dropping 5th gear, too. It seems to be quite a common problem with a lot of gearboxes since 5th was introduced.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Should I be worried that most of the bearings in your LT230 rebuild kit I just installed were A&S Fersa???

I did notice the front and rear output bearings had more play than the originals.

If what you meant by lower gears is 1-3 then they have the drive transferred through the lay-gear as does 5th. With the main shaft all locked up you have 4th which is by far the strongest path through the gearbox. I too had a noisy 5th but it turned out to be noisy in 1-3 and 5th, a lay-gear and input gear problem, those two were taking each other apart. Drover her home in 4th. My input gear/lay-gear were not as bad as some other R380 in the workshop where the gears were ground down until they did not have enough to mesh and send drive through the lay-gear.

I suspect that an external transmission cooler would help as well as a good synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid.

how many bearings in total, and what were what brands? I would hope that all the bearings be available in Timken, SKF, NSK or equivalent...If you are going to the trouble of rebuilding a box, no point putting crap back in it.

Regarding the larger 5th gear bearing mod. I would hope that we can find out the bearing type/# for those of us that are going to DIY and have the ability to do our own machining......

I now tow in fourth after advise from a mate. I found that at 100km/h the car actually performed better using slightly less fuel and a lower exhaust manifold temp. Trailer ways about 1000kg loaded.
