    Flywheel machining

    Hi All,

I currently have the gearbox out of my Defender getting rebuilt and I am going to replace the clutch while it's out. I need to have the flywheel machined, and what i would like to know is, should I have it machined with a mill or machined on a lathe. Is one better than the other or does it not really matter.

    Thanks Jeff

Is it a tdi or TD5? I know the TD5 cannot be machined and will need to be replaced.

They are usually machined on a surface grinder, lathe or mill surface finish would be a bit rough.

    What he said.

If you have someone in town who does brake disc machining they should be able to do it for you.

Thanks Isuzurover, there are a couple of places here that can do the machining, I just wasn't sure which one I should use as I have been told different things from different people, some have told me that Surface ground is the only way to go, and then my Pommy mechanic mate at work has told me that they only ever did them on a Lathe back in the UK. So i was just seeing what people on here have done to theirs

    Cheers Jeff

Hi JazzaD1, was yours done on a mill (Surface Ground) or on a Lathe?

    Cheers Jeff

IMO it should be surface ground (non directional finish)

That's how I've always had them machined.
