    TD5 Cooling - Allisport Radiator

    I have a 2004 D2A. I have spent a....actually not that small fortune over the years trying to keep the Disco "cool". After a Viscous fan disintergrating, damaging the radiator, and causing a suspected head gasket, I put in a new engine (once head was off, found bore was scored, and a new short engine from the UK was cheaper than rebuild), and had the radiator recored. I have a VNT turbo, with header, turbo and exhaust ceramic coated. I have an EMS-2 to monitor temperature. It all seemed to work fine, but I got nervous everytime the temp got into the high 90's with a trailer on.

    Fitted an Allisport alloy radiator last week. Not cheap....but very cheap compared to all of the above. 3 hr stint on the highway, with trailer on, ambient temp of 28 degrees.....and the highest recorded temp was 72!

    My advice..... bugger the rest of that stuff...get a good radiator! PWR does a spec one, as does allisport in the UK (cheaper).

    Sounds good might be something I need to look at
    Not sure a maximum operating temp of 72 degrees is a good thing though might actually be a bit cool??

    PWR was about a grand. PWR would deliver within 4 weeks.

    Allisport is listed on ebay at about 600GBP. I didnt pay that. I had to wait until they did a production run for them, which was about 7 months!

    I'm surprised the thermostat lets it run that cool unless thats the temp as the coolant exits the radiator.

    When you say 72°C are you talking measured off the back of the head or water temp? If it's off the back of the head, have you checked what the temp sensor is reading using the Nanocom? It would be handy to know a rough differential between head temp and coolant temp if that's what is being reported.

    I cant remember shipping. As I said, I ordered it in April, and it arrived in December.

    That is the temp measured by the EMS-2 as it exits the head. The thermostat is brand new (installed with the new radiator). I will have a look at nanocom on the weekend.

    The thermostat on the D2 Td5 shouldn't even open until 82degC at which point the Td5 is considered to be "warmed up". There should be no flow of coolant through the radiator below that 82degC. If you are seeing 72degC maximum something is not right - possibly the thermostat is stuck open.

    There was a recent thread on Td5 coolant temps. The consensus was that 115 degC was top end of the normal operating range and where coolant temps became excessive. Bear in mind that the thermostat isn't fully open until 96degC, so high 90s are well within normal operating range.

    Under about 2000rpm you'd be lucky not to be 100 degrees as I understand the cooling system.
