um, err, no they are neither. they can be sealed properly with sikaflex where they fit to the tub, and some form of positive pressure to prevent dust will help. but basically they are less dust and waterproof than an actual tailgate etc, especially in fine dust and big downpours.
is this on a 130 tub or flat tray?

canvas canopies aren't very well sealed for dust...

but mine is very dust free!

the trick is to pressurize the area and there will be no dust sucked in

the same can be done with a flexi glass one

And Flexiglass canopies will actually funnel the water in if opened in the rain.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

My father-in-law wanted some feedback as he is looking at one to put on a tray back ute (Toymota) and travel though Birdsville/Alice etc 9,000 km most off road.

He is not taking his brand new Range Rover but a twin cab ute.

Anyway wanted to check if the flexi glass canopies were water/dust proof. Probably dust is ore of the issue as he wants to put two fridges on the back of the Ute and hence not want dust through them.

How do you generate positive pressure? Some pump in the tray?

You fit two pop up vents on the top of it. They are accessories available from Flexiglass when the canopy is purchased. Open them when moving and they pressurise the canopy.

In my experience they are not either fully waterproof or dustproof. But as mentioned, after i had popup vents installed the amount of dust was reduced. I had the vents installed to keep our dogs cooler but the less dust was an added bonus.

yeah as said you need forward facing vents.
air is forced in there as you drive from a clean source (high up) and then its is forced out of all the leaks where dust could be drawn in if there was no pressure there

This is what arb have to offer

These are ones you can get from boating stores

and I think these are the ones from flexiglass
