What does it cost for a head gasket and timing belt change? My 300tdi disco1 is getting close to 230,000 and I'd like to be prepaired.
Any one recommend someone around bris to do the job.

Timing belt is easy, head should be straight forward.
If you want to have a go at doing the belt yourself, I've got the " special tools ".
Did mine a few months ago.
You may need the update kit for the timing belt pulleys.

If it ain't broke, don't fix...
Personally, I'd buy in all the bits and stick them in the garage so you've got everything ready for when it does blow.

Exactly  Some say yay some say nay im on the the nay side of things .
But in saying that i recently had to change the head on my Tdi with 320,000 ks for unrelated problems and nothing to do with over heatng ! , It had very minor and i mean minor evidence of blow by past the gasket in 1 spot. If it was not that i had to change the head i would still be driving with the same gasket today , Which is my opinion only . You do what you want but dont be scared by all the dooms day talk that some may try to scare you with .
Im only talking by experience as some others are aswell  Like i say if you scare easy then do it :p If your like me then push it
I Agree to disagree Jc :tease:
if your LR is your work vehicle and DD, then preventative maintainence goes a long way IMO
Might as well change your gearbox and everything else as preventative maintainence aswell:p , Come on how long is a piece of string where do you start and stop with such bizzare theorys on preventive work . My car is a DD i maintain it to the best of my ability but i dont change things just cause it might fail if that was the case any mechanicle machine,s will fail eventually , So why bother owning cars:cool:
It'would't hurt to give the gearbox and transfer case a new set of bearings and seals by this many KM, and also if you crack them open you should be able to assess any dammage that is starting to happen.
That's the point of doing PM's limiting mechanical failure. Or at least giving you a accurate mesure of when and how the machine will brakedown.Code:i dont change things just cause it might fail if that was the case any mechanicle machine,s will fail eventually
The latter is inportant as you dont want to be in the middle of nowhere and do a headgasket. and
A, Have no parts or tools to change it out.
b, not have enough food and water to be able to be rescued.
Oh and it's opinions like that that keep me flat out at work as a breakdown Sparky
Just my 2 cents worth.
well that kind of statement is silly....you and I both know that the R380 can and will fail at some point. Seems that I must have been blessed with a good one. 330,000km and still going, with 200-250,000km towing 1.8, but forth is getting sticky. That is why Im looking for a either real good, or used to build, late R380 from defender so I can have it to install rather than get stuck on the side of the road, with trailer and towing fees and and and and..............
Given that guys seeing many more vehicles pass through their hands and have a good eye for this thing (switched on) and they are saying that the HG are starting to break down at a certain point, consistantly, Id say that would fall into the bracket of a consumable and it be well advised to do.
The more I learn that is consumable the more I roll my eyes, but it does not change the fact.
I have been let down by my truck once with major engine failure and I learnt that there were a few things I should have been doing along the way (may or may not have helped in my case)
It seems to me the guys getting good reliable working kms out of their LRs are doing the stuff that needs doing. Just like 20,000km is more major than 10,000km service so is 200,000km 300,000km 500, 000km etc.
Did you know that LR recommend all rubber brake lines and seals be changed out every 100,000km.....
