    Warn winch not turning

Just back from a couple of days up the high country in the 130 and have a problem with my 9.5 XP winch, I was pulling a tree (biggish) off the track and the winch laboured down and stalled, after which the motor will not turn at all. I now have the plasma rope coiled up around the bullbar. The solenoids are clicking and a quick check with a test lamp showed that they seem to be contacting okay. What to check to determine if the motor is cactus, and what else should I be looking for? Can the brushes be accessed and changed in these motors? I was surprised that the winch stalled down as easily as it did, didn't even drag the 130 downhill first.

Has it ever been submerged in water? I ask because this is exactly what happened to my XD9000 and it was the brush assembly. The springs behind the brushes had rusted and they lost contact. A brush assembly was available and an easy install too. I assume the 9.5 is similar to the 9000, do they have the 4.6 or 6hp motor?. I got my brush assembly form these guys in Melb

I would pull the winch apart first and check the condition of the brushes and motor first. When my XD9000 is mounted on the ARB airbag compatible bullbar(D1) the drain holes are at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions, it stays half full of water and rusted things out, on the older ARB bars(Rangie Classic) they were down at the 6 o'clock position and could drain freely.

My xd9000 did the same while winching through a swamp hole, got slower and then stopped dead. when i got home i mucked around and couldnt get any signs of life, to cut a long story short it was a poor earth from winch motor to the chassis[surface rust inbetween].

Yep bad earth , muck in the motor and those crappy solenoids , Best thing you can do for a start is get your self a solid state solenoid less hassle

Thanks, I'll check the earth first as that sounds easiest to fix, hopefully will get a chance tonight.

Checked the earth, no problem there unfortunately. Looks like the winch will have to come out for further investigation. May not get time to do that for a fortnight.

    Hi Pod,

Quick check to see if the motor is the problem and not solenoids is jump the motor A terminal and F1 together and put 12v + on the F2 terminal on the motor. Make sure your earth is well connected and the motor should spin one way.
To make it spin the other way just reverse the process. Ie jump A and F2 together and put 12v + on F1 terminal. Usually terminals F1and F2 are close together and the A terminal is away on its own on the winch motor.

disengage the clutch and Unwind the winch rope a little way, tie it to something that weighs between 5+10 kg (I usually use a tyre) and stretch it out gently
Failure to do so can wind up damaging the winch rope or pulling the fairlead through the rollers

I also suggest initially applying the power through a smaller light duty fly lead with a high wattage bulb (50-80W worth of headlight is fine) for the first application just in case the brushes are shorted or only one of the contact solenoids is stuck closed and causing problems. This procedure stops you from letting the smoke out of important parts.

Not a problem, I've removed the rope from the winch as I was unable to spool it back on the drum and had about 5m wrapped around the bullbar. Hope to get a chance to do the jumper lead test tomorrow, unfortunately don't look like having time to go any further than that, e.g. removing winch, until after next week. Just the info i was after with regard to testing to isolate motor or solenoid issues.

the best place to put the light is in the bridging circuit position (motor A to F1 per Gitneys instructions) to test if its the solenoids. and then individually onto each winding set (you may need to independantly earth each winding as you go) you can use a multimeter but you may fall into the "phantom voltage" issue.
