ugu80 and Ron... Yup, point made. Shafts in the rear it is!! Uninformed, early Td5... the sound sold it to me, and nope, not sure the front shafts will be happy about the 180bhp+ TD42 that's going into the 130 once I've finished tweaking it in its original location.. The rusty Patrol is making for a good test bed!!! :p
Ive never seen a landy do a detroit when an axles let go, I know of a few in lesser brands driven by people whove all the gear but no idea that have popped the troit but then when you continue driving with a diff housing full of metal chunks all bets are off.
I'd love to see some pics if you get a chance Ron.
If you've got (or had) the whole diff housing there I'd also be interested in your thoughts as to whether it popped with the axle, or if it looks more like it was driven with the broken axle and the Detroit damage may have been after the fact.
In the link that Ugu80 posted the fact that the crownwheel and pinion were also destroyed as a result of an axle breakage doesn't quite gel for me, although I admit I've go little idea of what goes on in a diff in the milliseconds after an axle break (other than a large twang).
Steve
I have broken 4 axles over the years three 28 spline and one 31 spline all with
Detroits and 9"diffs have yet to see any damage to a diff or locker :p
In a defender you might not notice straight away keep driving and do some damage Mine were in a series with part time transfer case all when in 2wd
fairly obvious to tell .Axles were R4 heat treated to about 95-100 tons so go off with a bit of a bang:o

The story is a cat one Isuzu tanker of about 14/15 tonnes weight.
I do not not know what the drivers story was with this.
I assume the vehicle was driven off road in Two wheel drive and only had one wheel with traction on a rock shelf that over strained the drive axle.
The mechanics told me the axle broke and it was replaced......but things were not right.
They pulled the diff centre and found this.
No big shrapnel, but the detroit must be replaced as a unit as the parts are not advailible separate.

the above pics were taken tonight on the garage floor in poor lighting.
It should be of interest to note the operation of the detroit is different to other auto lockers on the market with the floating cam ring fitted in the centre which controls the unlocking of the diff.
Note the wear of the outer dog clutch teeth........I dont know if it was wear or though breakage.
Note this was a factory fitting on this model of truck.
I have driven them on and off road and they are a part time 4wd truck and The only time I notice the locker is doing a hard 90 degree turn backing into the fire shed were the truck will give a little lurch as the outer unlocks and the drive goes to the inner wheel giving a slight effect of a gear ratio change during the corner.
Most RFS drivers are totally unaware of the trucks being fitted with detroits.
