Can I use it for spare parts or not?

Yer I did write disco first of all and but quickly changed it before i got hit by stones. Thanks for the information i reckon I'll go ahead with buying it and try to get this old girl roadworthy before the coppers give me a canary.

Actually Series 3 has synchromesh on all gears, 2a (and 1,2) only on third and fourth, but the gearbox is generally considered more robust. A change in the clutch release mechanism means that the gearboxes can only be swapped as a unit with the clutch and bell housing.

Note that the lwb (both 3 and 2a) came with a six cylinder engine as an option - this is set further back than the four, leading to differences in the firewall, prop shafts, floor panels etc - so you might find find differences depending on what engine was there before the Holden in each example. The sixes also have wider front brakes (fitted to all models in late production Series 3, can be fitted to any Series Landrovers with advantage).

Another difference between the 3 and 2a in the long wheelbase (lwb) is that unlike the 2a lwb they have a much more robust Salisbury rear diff.

Nah, no stones. We do probably jump in with the funnies a bit quickly when someone gets the naming conventions wrong though :p

If you're not quite sure what you're up against, (I don't know what your Land Rover background is) it may be worth posting a request for a member to come and look it over for you?

There is a huge amount of knowledge on here on Series Landies, you'll find whatever help you need, just ask.

Good call Sheerluck. Yeah, if someone is local have them come with you! If they are anything like us they'd be keen to see it! As for the Defender bit... (I was going to let him off that one;). I came in later and he'd removed the Disco bit... or I'd have done the same! :D Either way, he'll end up with two Land Rovers in his yard!!! Straight into it I say!!!

Should'nt be any problems with the majority of parts. I keep my 2A going by using a couple of 3's as parts mules.

Damn, I had my bag of stones ready and the factory rivet-counting template, too.

Anyway, SIIAs and SIIIs are so similar that within the factory they called the SIII the SII&7/8, according to an interview. I think that virtually everything except for the gearbox synchromesh was just the company's way to get through the new safety requirements.
