This happened to mine. Bought an exchange unit from a bloke in Queensland who re-builds them. - with better material, I suspect.

The usual test, suck on the vacuum line and it should hold vaccuum.

My Dad had a faulty vacuum advance when he first bought the D1 he owned for a while. These guys were able to supply a reco distributor that fixed the issue: Performance Ignition Services

And Performance also does vacuum advance modules at a reasonable price.

Cheers all for the suggestions. Certainly gives me somethings to look at. Now to find the time. However, the problem showed it's ugly mug a bit more than normal this weekend, so I may have to make the time. I'll also see how many new swear words I can create. I'm pretty good at that.

I will post the results...........of the problem, not the swear words.

    Hmmmm

More I hear, the more I reckon the fault will be ignition related.

OK more of an update after some "testing" ie actually paying attention to what is happening and when all the time.

LPG - When driving a loud "click" hollow in sound can be heard coming from the cylinders (scuba type), then the loss of power occurs. ie hold foot flat, slow acceleration then it "kicks in". After no specific amount of time, the same "click" is then heard again and the problem is no longer, until the next click.

Petrol - First noticed this when driving on the highway at 100km/h a couple of weeks back. It was p**sing down with rain and while sitting steady on 100km/h there was a sudden loss of power and rapidly went down to 80km/h before I pulled to the side of the road. Turned the engine off. Checked vacuum hoses etc and all good. Started and drove off again without any problems. Over the last week or two, it now does the same thing at low speed ie 50 - 70km/h.

I haven't managed to get to Bee-Utey's fix yet. Had it planned to do the weekend after Anzac Day and the parts lined up, but thanks to some dodgey tennants, our time & money has been spent on our Rental. Anywho, I was wondering if there were any further suggestions. I'd rather get a bit of "guidance" before I go to a mechanic in this small town and say, "here have a crack/look at fixing this".

A side thought, is it possible to post video in the threads?

    Cheers Craig E.

Sounds like gas solenoid is turning off and on

My first thought was something turning on/off. How would that effect petrol though? I've had the thought that the gas is switching "on/off" when running on petrol - if that's possible.

Unplug either the gas or petrol solenoid and see if it still happens

The most common reason for the gas solenoid cutting out is of course ignition failure. The gas flow is stopped whenever the ignition stops, by a device called a 'safety cut-out" or "safety switch" which senses ignition pulses. This is not a fault in the gas system but the way it is supposed to operate.

The common thread is ignition failure. Have you checked the cables around the coil for tightness and cleanliness? I've seen many D1s with loose connectors, they get vibrated around a bit and need to be removed, squashed gently with pliers and refitted.
