Cracker, have you got a workshop manual for D1? If not, get one from the Shop (Dave's Interesting Things) - RAVE 1.
It's got all the info you'll ever need.
Good luck with the repairs.

Buy the Rave, study it well.
Dont cock about with the exhaust, get it out of the way its worth the effort.
dont skimp on cleaning things
take lots of pictures
dummy up the bolts
Reherse the torquing sequence BEFORE you put the first bolt in, work out where you're going to be swiging the torque wrench and the breaker bar bet you hit or foul on something.
have someone to stabilize the head of the torque wrench, make sure they are in place when you do the rehersal
number the bolts IAW the magic sequence. have the guy stabilizing put a difference colour dot to the numbering each time you do a sequence. DONT skimp on the waiting period.
Be careful of the manifold bolts, nothing sucks more than having to pull it all apart again becuase you pooched a manifold bolt.
Dont be scared of the vally cover, it might make some odd noises going in but its just noise.
Thanks for the replies.
Head is on way to have valves put in. No signs of any real damage. Picking up VRS kit now to start rebuild. Just a pity I have to work the next 3 days. So I hope I have it all back in tonight so I can just check over and test fire Monday.

Surely, test start....
If you haven't fitted the heads yet, turn them upside down, get them more or less level and fill the combustion chambers with metho then check the ports for leakage it's a quick way of checking how well your valves are sealing.
Turned out it was a stuck valve in the guide in pot 4 only. All other valves good. The guys at Pryce engines fixed it up. Got the head back at 11am today and she was running by 7pm. Sounds great, first time I,ve heard it with all cylinders firing.
Raw lift kit is in, tie rods and pitman arm to fit Thursday, then alignment . Pink slip Monday and rego renew. Can,t wait to get her back on the road and up the beach.
All the work now completed. Air con thermo fans found to be not working last week as well so they were replaced. The guys at All four x 4 have looked after me for all the parts and great price on the Airtec snorkel . Peter at Newcastle Muffler Service fitted his 2" into 2.5" pipe yesterday. Sounds great and runs much better as well. Waiting for hub socket to arrive from APT today so I can re grease and tighten the bearings then back up the beach.
How can I post a photo ???
Click on "post reply", then scroll down to "manage attachments" and click on it. That will open up a little window, so click on "browse" and find your photo on your computer. Click "upload" and wait for it to finish. Close the little window and you'll see your picture listed above "manage attachments". Right click and open in a new tab. Go to the new tab and copy the URL from the addresss, go back to the reply page and click on the little picture of the mountains and sun. It will bring up a little window and just paste the URL in there.
It sounds complicated but it's the easiest way I've found, especially after a few goes.
