    discovery diff in defender?

I need to replace the rear diff in my 110 Defender. I have heard that a discover diff will fit straight on. Does anyone know if this is possible or a good idea?

the disco diff does not have the strength of the 110 diff in my opinion. If yours is a Salisbury diff you should try to source another as these were arguably the best diff in the 110 series. What is wrong with yours? Is it just internals or have you damaged the housing? The disco diff would give you more clearance under the pumpkin but there are threads here on how to shave the Salisbury to improve clearance without weakening.

If your car has a Salisbury diff, then no, the Disco diff will not fit - it is of a totally different design.

Later year Defenders had what is often called a P38A diff. I have no idea just how similar it is to the diff in my P38A.

    What year is your Defender?

    Hi,
Yes you can fit a disco 1 axle under a 110 without much fuss, I know a guy who has done it but... He has "pegged" the diff and has after market diff and half shafts.
He swears by it and would never go back to the Sals.
His landy is a 110 county with oversize muddys but only the standard 3.5.

If your dead set on this i may be able to get some pics for you.
Me? I have the grader blade and I'm keeping it!

Are we talking about the diff centre or a complete rear end?

A Disco diff is not the same as a P38A diff. I found this out when I bought a "P38A" diff off eVilBay only to find it was a Disco diff and of a different design and size even though they had the same ratios.

I run disco rear for the clearance and its fine . Ashcroft shafts and flanges with a Detroit center . You need a custom tailshaft as your current one going to be too short .
If you can't fix it with a hammer , you got an electrical problem .......

Are there any other upsides to the swap other than under diff clearance?

Oh and a less sloppy driveline I guess...

I thought the tailshaft would have been too long if any thing.
