    Discovery 1 alternator

    Hi guys

I am having the dredded alternator issue with my landy and want to run a few things buy the experts.

Firstly my land rover D1 has just had the 4.6 upgrade with the standard landy alternator left on the motor. I am having intermittent charging issues and the tacho is reflective of when the alt is charging. This is the second alternator in the last 6 months and it is starting to become a pain in the a@#e. I have a dual battery set up but other than that nothing has changed.

one option i was looking was putting a P38 120a alternator, but im not sure of reliability and they are hard to get a hold of.

second option was to try and get an alternator off another type of vehicle that is interchangable, I have done some research but its hard to understand what alternators will fit. (prefered option)

thirdly replacing the alternator with another 100 a magnetti. (least prefered option) .

any help on this issue would be much appreciated as i cant take the flashing dash and headlights anymore and really dont want to get stuck anywhere.

if you have the miltiple belt drives all you need to do is visit an auto electrician and purchase a suitble Bosch alternator. A friend of mine adapted an universal 120 amp unit with little trouble. Some minor mount modifications are needed.

Early Magna and XF falcon alternators used to be the first choice, but as they are getting rare the universal ones are worth adapting.

Take the alt down to an auto elec and get them to look up the bosch parts book, you will find a universal or even a dunnydoor one that will fit.

OK we have charge again. First the back story on the LANDY and what I have since discovered .

Landy was purchased by me about 8 months ago , I bought it o a guy who had blown the engine up and replaced it with a brand spanking new 4.6l Rangie engine, I was having issues with charging from the start, knowing there was no charge I immediately bought a second hand alternator. upon removal of the old unit I looked at the belt routing and drew it down on a piece of paper so I could remember later. the second hand alternator was doing the same thing once it was in speratic charging and tacho going all over the place when the alt decided to work, so once again I purchased another alternator this is the third alt now been in the car since purchace.

The alt that I got today was brand new and cost 400 bucks , once I put it in there was still speratric charging and it was behaving the same way all the alts before it had. So I went online to find out what the hell was going on with this thing and it turns out the belt was routed incorrectly. This had massive impacts on the way the alternator was operating because once I placed the belt on correctly the alternator was working beautifully with no issues. now i have a brand new alternator that I didn't need to purchase all because of a simple error. MORAL : MAKE SURE YOUR BELT IS ROUTED CORRECTLY OR YOU WILL BE PAYING FOR STUFF YOU DONT NEED. If any of you guys are having the same issues check the belt route

    Issues included:
Fine bites of bet rubber all through engine bay
Idler jumping around when A/C on
    squeeling belts
    No charge from alternator
    speratic charge from alternator
Tacho only working sometimes(mainly when alt is charging)

Ah yes, the belt fits two ways, one of which gives very little wrap around the alternator pulley, and gets too close to the fan cover..... the belt squeal should have alerted you right from the beginning.

It should have but the guy had put that much belt grip on it I thought it was that causing the issue, Very expensive lesson learnt here I wont be falling for that one again.
