On the D1, every time it gets used.
On the Golf, never. On the Merc ML, before a long trip (<100km), or every 8 weeks or so.
recently there has been a few posts about checking engine oil...or finding part of the dip stick missing
i never check mine between services...quite often i go 5000km without popping the bonnet (nearly all of my driving is either commuting or black top touring). my oil level starts on the upper limit after an oil change and ends up a mm or 2 below the upper limit by 5000km, therefore i know she pretty much doesn't use oil
even when i toured the simpson desert for three weeks i didnt have a plan to check under the bonnet....5 days in to the trip the clutch master starting leaking so i popped the bonnet and than about a week later the heater matrix started leaking water so it was up with the bonnet again than i was home a bit over a week later
i wonder if i didn't have the spare tyre on the boonet i would check a little more often
when i was in the ADF we were supposed to check daily.......do they still do halt parades

On the disco every second time I use it (I know it doesn't use any oil but better to check that face a huge repair bill).
On the Toyota troopy once a week.
When out bush, every morning, first parade service. Guess it's my army driver training coming out.
If your bonnet is to heavy to lift, try fitting a set of struts to make it easier.

I always do a walk around every morning while on tour and check for any wet or oily spots under the car, check the rear of the car for spots and check the inside of the rear mudflaps for spots. I also usually get down on the kness and look for wet crossmembers or diff noses. I also do a sniff test around the wheels to see if I can smell diff oil.
In this way you can be pretty sure you don't have any new leaks or wheel seals going.
About once a week at home I look at the floor of the garage to check for any new spots.
If you do all that , you only have to check the oil after defined Ks like once every 2K or so on my old RRC, but I still did it once a week or so.

Generally before long trips only. Normally park in the exact same spot, so I can see if there is a reason to check...
Once a week or before any trip 'across the border'.

One my cars, about once a week or so. On the company car - I didn't use to check it, but now it seems to be using oil, so I check it when the 'Check Engine' warning starts bonging and flashing up on the dash - apart from once where the ECU had died, it has been low oil every time...![]()
