The plastic dowels are the major factor. When I pulled the head on mine easter to fix the head gasket the plastic dowels were a distinct z-shape. Other major causes recently discussed in another thread included previous overheating or lots of short trips.Quote:

Offtrack is right - nanocom will help with diagnosis. If not, need to think through what the symptoms are and go through one area at a time.
Lots of things can be the issue - sensors are just one area.
Fuel pump / fuel filter may be an issue.
When was the filter last changed? Can you hear the fuel pump running? The FPR may be faulty and not be providing enough fuel pressure at the injectors (unlikely though).
Can you feel the turbo kick in? Or is the turbo slowing spooling up?
What is the condition of the inlet manifold? These gunk up with the EGR in place, the sensor may be coated with gunk, or the air just can't get in fast enough. EGR may be on all the time??
Consider taking the exhaust off after the turbo and see if this allows it to rev. May be a blocked CAT or exhaust.
Won't be intercooler hoses collapsing, as this creates black smoke usually.
Fuel filter was changed about 1000kms ago yes you can hear pump when switched on runs for about 20 odd seconds then switches off. I can't honestly say you can feel the turbo kick in so believe the turbo is slowly spooling up. Vehicle is not fitted with egr so inlet manifold is clean as with the sensor. Vehicle was never fitted with a cat.
Sounds similar to another TD5 I'm trying to help with. Has the head been taken off? One train of thought is that timing is out by one tooth, either advancing or retarding it. This is due to not enough checking of alignment during reassembly. Don't know how to easily check this though.
Another one, which I'm leaning towards still is that the wastegate valve isn't sealing, causing boost to take forever to build up. (Effectively working as normally aspirated engine with a bit of turbo assist / exhaust restriction). This is after checking the wastegate wasn' t stuck open. Exhaust pipe needs to be taken off to check valve condition. (?!!) So check wastegate movement after taking actuator off. If moving, checking the valve condition should be considered.
