    lt 95 gearbox

Hi, I have a 78 rangei with lt 95 box behind a 350 chev, its been a really good and quiet box for a lt 95, but recently. The tranfer case seems to have got louder with a faint ticking sound, I'm still driving it but am concerned, my question - is their much chance that the fault could be fixed working on transfer case with box still in car, what repairs can be done to tranfer box while still in car, I know its a bit vague but just hoping to avoid gearbox removal, thanks.

Yes is can be done in situ tho its best to run the rear end up ramps or put on hoist if posable .

Tho a hint before you start as you wont have to remove the front shaft or out put is to lock the center diff this way when you re fit the center diff/out put shaft it will slide in easy as if you dont you wont get the output shaft in as the diff lock collar wont be in its correct spot as it rides on the out put shaft tube when you pull it apart you will see what i mean as ive fixed a few in situ now

Your noise tho will most likely be the intermediate shaft washers worn and the bearings have worn and the shaft may well be toast too .

Is it a later LT95 with .996 high range gear set ? and what size tyres do you run ? My old rangie with the 4.4 had the .996 high range with 33x12.5x15 tyres and standard diff ratios and it was geared nice as the extra torque works well with the higher ratio output

So if its not a .996 high range transfer it would be good time to do the swap which is simple as long as you can get hold of the bits ..

    lt 95

Thanks for the reply jokka, it is the high range .996 tranfer , the box came out of a 84 rangie, I'm only running 31s and the diffs are standard but they seem to take a fair bit of abuse , anyone in the melbourne area that could help me out with it as I have limited experiance knowledge with lt 95 tranfer case , the main gearbox seems fine changes good etc, ok thanks

Do you know of a link to a tutorial on how to change the high range gears. I need to do mine.

Thanks JC - my winch drive arrangement at the bottom compounds issue as bits go flying left right and centre if you are not careful - but seems pretty straight forward.

    Cheers

I think most of us learned by just having a go . . . do a good search on this site and you'll find a big heap of information, probably more than anywhere else on the Internet for the LT95. Here's a good start: LT95 Transfer Case Intermediate Shaft Wear
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
