Rubber bungs in the front of the chassis rails

Hello everyone. I was doing some rust inspection on the 110, its a 94' so getting on. I noticed rubber bungs in the front of the chassis rails, on the ends of each rail. So i removed the bungs, cleaned out the muck. Was wondering if its worth leaving them out or keeping them in? If I leave them out will mud get so far up inside the chassis that it will be impossible to remove?

Mine have been missing ever since I got my vehicle, and I've never had any problem with mud in the chassis. I don't use mine to bulldoze mud, and most of the river crossings I've been through have been fairly clean. I like to think that at least the water has somewhere to drain out of.

    Leave them in....

Helps prevent dirt, sand, mud getting in.

Leave them out! I bought a county 6 month ago and still had them in the LHS is now rusty as the drain holes have blocked up and was full of mud and sand. The RHS was fine due to the good English engineering on the power steering reservoir. It has kept the RHS just damp, stopping it from rusting. My other ( 1st ) county had them pulled out 14 years ago when I got it and the chassis is rust free.

Both in my defender and no mud in there...

    It's called cleaning

Don't any of you flush your rails?

Thanks for the all the helpful info guys. Iv decided to leave them out, so the chassis will always dry completely an not hold moisture.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^ what tombie said!!
Most driven lr's don't hold water, the mud in the chassis does
Once or twice a year at the car wash I walk around the 110 with the high pressure lance and squirt into most chassis openings for as long as it takes for the water to run clear as it leaves through all openings
(For geelong guys I use the car wash opposite try boys ?? Apco?? On the way to Clifton springs from melbourne-CHEAP!!!!)
Maybe once a year I fire up kerro gun and squirt fish oil into the openings when I know the chassis is dry and clean until it runs or mists out
This is handy for the bulkhead too, just remove the top hinge and squirt through the holes
The fish oil thins (if its cold) nicely and sprays well through the kerro gun at 100 psi
