Smile TDI 300 TIMING BELT FUEL SOAKED

    Hi all,

In the process of timing belt change, i estimate 120000 kms plus on
old belt and over 10 years old. Disco 1 95 model

Have not driven vehicle a lot or really hard the last 3 years.

I noticed fuel dripping from timing case wading plug hole a few months ago.
only used a 3 tanks driving since i noticed leak.
Leak is from IP shaft which I have replaced in situ (not too hard a job).

This model IP pump shaft can be locked in place by removing clip near
front of pump and tightening 5 mm bolt. Mind you I had to really tighten it
    to keep shaft still.
No woodruff key on this install, nearly bent my harmonic
balancer remover to get pulley off shaft.

Seal was very hard when i inspected it.
Old belt was fine no delamination or damage.
Completely fuel soaked for well over 6 months but wouldnt have driven more than 1000 kms.

    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

You have the old type of timing belt kit that allows the timing belt to walk and rub on the case. I would recommend fitting the upgraded kit.

Yes i concur this is older type,
New kit is $330, has newer crank gear but not the spacer,

Also timing case HRC2510 idler bearing was noisy so I drilled a 3mm hole in the back
and pressure filled it with grease, saved me $350 for a new cover unless u guys have a different fix For this problem.

I have decided to change belt and idler bearing ETC 8560 only, time will tell if this was wise <grin>

Yes old belt does have a small shoulder on inside from the old style tensioner pulley, which has`flangeS, ERR 1972

    An old saying
'if it works dont @#$% with it"

Am using the money saved to buy a secondhand ARB diff lock.

However I may pull timing cover after10'k to inspect install.

I had the same problem with my belt wearing the same. I purchased all new upgraded cogs andc pulleys and it made no difference.

Read my thread on how I fixed mine with a hacksaw blade.

    What Causes This

As for your fan bearing, a bearing can be obtained, you don't need to buy the whole housing.
