    Yokohama Geo 265/60/R18 pressures?

    Gents,

Have just got a set of Yokohama Geolander ATS 265/60R18 G012 fitted to the D4 and I have a question re tyre pressures.

The placard on the D4 states 33 front/36 rear for a light load based on a 255/60R18. The tyres were set at 40 by the fitter, which from experience is their usual practice.

Neither the new Yoko's or the old Pirelli Scorpions they replaced have a recommended pressure written on the side wall, just a max pressure.

Over the last 5 years on the D3 & D4 I've run two sets of Scorpion 255/60R18 at the placard pressures with no dramas, good wear and performance but the Yoko's are a 265 so I'm not sure what pressure I should be running.

    Sage advice please.....

Hey Mark, I've never had an issue with slight increases like that. I would go with what you have always done and rely on the normal rules for tyre wear for over and under inflation.

Except for the Deefa I have always run slightly wider tyres on standard rims and stuck with the original presures or a higher if I was driving faster or loads etc.

This of course means I know nothing technical but look at the inrease, it's nothing, 10mm wider and 6mm higher. You will have an increase in volume but preasure issues should remain the same.

In anything ligt truck I have always run 40psi. Droping back to factory spec night give you a better rid around town, might.

Without having tried these tyres, here's how I would approach it.

If the D4 is in standard trim (ie no barwork etc), I would start at the placard pressures and drive for a day or two to see how it feels. Then try adding 2psi front and rear and see how it feels. This should make the car feel a little more responsive, but may make the ride a little harsher. Keep making adjustments of 1 or 2psi until you find where the balance between comfort and handling feels best for you. I would expect it to be within a couple of psi of the placard pressures, but definately not below them. For example, I run my 19" LTZs on the D4 at 34/38 as that feels the best to me.

If you have a bar and/or winch up front you'll need another couple of psi to handle the weight. If you have a load in the rear, likewise you'll need to run a few more psi.

    Cheers,
    Jon

Thanks Guys. I've let them down to 33/36 and will see how things go.

    Reply from Yokohama:

    Hi Mark.

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Most dealers will set the pressures between 36-40psi in 4WD vehicles and is generally fine however Yokohama always recommend running placard pressure.

Your placard should have a loaded and unloaded pressure recommendation, if not a 4-6 psi increase for the vehicle when loaded should be ok and then you can drop back down to 33/36psi when unloaded.
