Not sure if it has been mentioned, but a defective hose that has started degrading internally could easily be a source of "black" stuff. Again this could be verified through analysis by a suitable lab.

Thanks Isuzurover, yep I was wondering if that could be the case too.
I'll try and get some pics of the 'damaged' coolant filler tomorrow so we can all see what it's about, just remembering now too that the guy said that the hoses seemed soft so could like be the case that their lining has been weakened somehow....
Will see in the morning....Happy days!
Also remember you supposedly can't cook these things, pretty sure it was JC who mentioned they start shutting down as temps rise (they have sensors everywhere) as I think he had that happen to him when test driving a customers 130.
OK, have picked up the truck (it starts fine, runs fine, engine not cooked) and taken it to MR, they've confirmed the cooling system is full of this black rubbery substance, likely to be the linings of the pipes.
They've never seen anything like that before, have no idea what has caused it.
They reckon it'll need ever part of the cooling system changing, pipes etc even possibly the rad depending on how gunked up it is....
Just had a look through my service catalogue - Engine coolant changed at 44,000 kms by 'Blacklocks' and official Landrover dealer.....the plot thickens, reckon I need to give them a call eh!
....And of course, BlackLocks are insisting that they used the correct coolant, and because they never make mistakes it would appear I'm liable....
Honestly, dealers really do just suck...
Regardless of whether BlackLocks used the right or wrong coolant why was it even changed in the first place with only 44,000k on the clock? What service requirements dictate this?
However at the same time:
1. LandRover has one of the smallest dealer/service networks of all major 4x4 sellers in Australia.
2. You are legally entitled to have your vehicle maintained by any qualified mechanic without affecting warranty.
I don't see how a company can sell "go anywhere" vehicles yet frequently try (illegally) to nullify warranty claims for people who could not or did not get servicing done at dealers for a variety of reasons.
I wouldn't think so.Once you get a report from MR and then the FULL history of what has been done to the vehicle, then go back to LR,things should get sorted.
Other people, on this site have had MR do a report on a vehicle under warranty, then gone back to the dealer and had the issue sorted.
Sure, dealer stamps are nice in the service book, but my LR's have all been serviced at MR,and i have never had an issue with a warranty repair at the dealer. In fact with my sons Puma, the dealer went out of their way to sort a couple of issues which were picked up by MR,a week before the warranty ran out.
Coolant change at 44K? More interwesting info . These wascally wabbits take some hunting! :D
