From what I know of the 4HP22, the Tdi bell housing should bolt up no problem, not sure if the flex plates are different though.
Also, the Td5 box will be an EH variant, so you'll need something like an Ashcroft compushift to make it work.
Does anyone know if a D2 auto with TD5 bellhousing can be swapped off for a 300TDi belhousing and will it (D2 auto and T/C with 300TDi bellhousing) fit behind a 300TDi, any other problems that might be encountered, Regards Frank.

The Ashcroft Compushift is designed to work with an engine like the TD5, with all the electronic gizmos, like a TPS which the 300TDi doen't have. So are all the TD5 autos electronically controlled, Regards Frank.
Trouble with that is Ashcroft want 795 British Quid for one, could buy a complete 300TDi auto and T/C for less than that here, no way round it??, Regards Frank.
Would the internals, TD5 ZF, other than the electronics be the same as the 300TDi box internals, clutch packs, etc., Regards Frank.
Bee utey, I just found my ZF-4HP-22 workshop manual and it covers both the standard and the EH box, seems, aside from the solenoids and wiring it is only the valve bodies that are different, the mechanical side looks to be the same as they only show the different valve bodies in a supplement at the back of the manual. I was thinking it might be feasible to swap the standard valve bodies over to the electronic box, any thoughts, regards Frank.
Kickdown cam and governor are also likely to be different, but could swap from your 300tdi box. Other thing to check is length of housing between auto and transfer - the D1 V8 has a shorter housing and gearbox output shaft than the 300tdi, don't know about the td5 but worth checking as to change output shaft is a complete strip down.
Good luck
