Gav - mine used to run like a dog so I decided to bite the bullet and get a professional to look at it - noting I have gas as well.
First thing was that it was sucking air where the inlet manifold joins the heads - so maybe you are also suffering this issue - this was a no cost diagnosis - they have a spray the is used or if you spray starting fluid around engine revs will pick up as the fluid is sucked in through the leak.
I replaced mine and then took the truck back and less than an hour on the electronic tuneup gear and all was good - $150.
So you can stuff around with it but getting someone to sort it for you is money well spent in my view.

I here you, and you are probably right, but I really, REALLY don't like anyone else touching my cars. Apart from the trannie in the L322 I haven't paid a Mechanic since I was 17 and I always get nervous when someone else is looking at my cars.
Always prefer to learn myself and muddle my way though. If that fails, then I'll try something else...:D
