I think you should just fit Monster Energy stickers instead. Much cheaper, much better on/off road than an unneeded lift and it'll still impress the same crowd.

If you don't drive off road, or only drive on mild off road tracks, then standard height is best.
IMHO a suspension lift is required if you want to do much off road traveling. The benefits for this are (my order of benefit):1) Increased approach, departure and break-over angles. You were dead wrong when stating "it does nothing to raise ground clearance". I have come across people with young children on board who were well and truly stuck because of insufficient approach angle. The lack of approach angle also made recovery difficult in that particular case. At one time, when I had a disco 1 with 3" suspension lift I suffered a reasonable amount of damage because of the poor departure angle - again a case where there was little alternative.I will not have another disco 1, but if l did have one, then I would not hesitate to do the same suspension lift.
2) Improved ride off road and less stress on vehicle due to the combination of increased bump travel and not using stiff (heavy) springs.
I never had a problem with handling, it wasn't a sports car, but I never had the slightest issue driving to the speed limits and if the 300Tdi rubber band produced more power I could have comfortably driven much faster than the open road traffic. I should add that I never used a roof rack, much less a heavily loaded one.

In response to the clearance, yes a lift will improve approach, departure and ramp over, but not true clearance under the vehicle, this is only done by bigger tyres.
If you work out how much better your approach and departure improves, you will find it quite minimal. ( but that was the reason I replaced mine )
I fully agree with the comments that there is no need to raise the car, and you will find it effects other areas. But each to their own, The amount of cars I see which are jacked right up with the biggest set of tyres on, and most of them have never even seen gravel.
If it was me, I would consider taller tyres, not much wider though, to give a similar effect, and advatages. Only issue is it effects your gear ratio, and possibly your steering.
