oh, and for my input on your bump steer problem ferno, i agree the spring hanger bushes are most likely stuffed, also check the spring clamps on the leaves, if the springs are loose on the axle and the leaf clamps part way along the spring are loose [ie worn, allowing the leaves to move sideways] then the axle will wander around causing the driver to work harder than necessary.
bump steer can also be aggravated by the axle not square/vertical/ whatever to the chassis, or sagged springs, wide wheels, oversize tyres
and on etc.

have come to the contusion(too hard to spell conclusion, and didn't want to misspell it!)that it is definately the bushes,springs are not loose, neither are the u-bolts,rims are standard l/r running 750x16 (although they do have retreads on) so bushes are the likely culprit as it only does it on cornering! Once again I thank everyone for there input to this subject ,feel free to continue if you wish with any other techy tips in regard to this subject that mite be of assistance to anyone else in the same predicament :wink: 8)

yeah ferno i know its probably wot we all said bushes, but take it for a spin [no don't] without the shocks [its ok folks i know where ferno is, its safe] or try others on it

I think if it was shockies ,it would be more like a body roll action, but this is definately a feel as if the axle wants to go in the opposite direction to that which you are steering, will have to try the tyre lever test this w/e if time permits(the better half comes home on sunday, so had better clean up a bit ,maybe ) :roll:

i replaced the front shackles on my beastie today, didnt venture into the realm of bushes as they looked fair, so will leave them till after the straddie trip next week.

shackles themselves are a whole world of hurt if you have a siezed bolt and you dont have an oxy set handy [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

got the good old thing back to within 10mm of straight which is good compared to the 25-30 it was out prior. amazing how much a few mm's of wear on pins and bushes can add up to.

gotta hunt up a full set of 3 5/8" centered shackles as i now have 4" on the front and 3 5/8" on the rear. off to british offroad next week i suppose [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

didnt realise how bad it was till i loaded a heap of paving blocks into it the other day... that straightened it up and it slowly went back to its old self as i unloaded them.

mine tended to take off to the passenger side when i changed gear, ie i back off the gas and the unit headed left, put power back on back it came to the right.

will see tomorrow how the new shackles have or have not helped that.

Sorry, problem was this end with the server, couldn't access any links, so had to logoff/log back on again, stupid T***** big puddle ,clear as mud it is!!

Update on sus steering ; NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING!!!upon jacking up of front end this morn.,although the u-bolts LOOKED tight , there was a very minute amount of movement in them, resulting in about one to one and a half threads of tightening! :oops: :oops: :oops:
However, I haven't taken it for a drive yet so don't know if it solved the problem, I feel like such a der!!!!!

And welcome to the knowledge of loose "U" :oops: bolts Your penance shall be 10 second Inhalation of a dirty nappy! :twisted: No wonder it steered like a Stoned Crow now go and check the two tie rod ends on the horizontal steering box to steering relay rod and also the pitman( Drop Arm) nut, (have assistant move st/wheel and check for movement )the nut is about 1 1/8sae I think , as this will give a knocking sound and excess play in the steering , tighten to 60-80 Ft/lbs regards Rocket :wink:

I recently found these gon2far suspension kits online and was looking for more info (the page referring to them seems to tell em they shut down) so I started poking around on here- found this OLD thread that mentioned it.

Can anyone tell me more about these kits?
Do they still make one?
Is there a similar kit?
Is it worth trying to track down a 2nd hand kit for my S3 1975 SWB?
