I tried a couple of these about 20 years ago but didn't like them. Their switching transistors and heat sinking are tiny so they can't possibly handle high output coils without exploding. From memory they worked better if the positive was run to a better 12V source than a resistor fed coil, so a new wire from the ignition switch may help. The Crane XR700 was a much better piece of kit with a large external ignition module. In any case I gave up points conversions as a dead loss and went to full electronic high energy distributor conversions instead. Mucho zappier.
