They have all tried and so far the D4, well actually FROM the 2007 D3 on the EGR can't be done, and from MY2011 D4 on, the re-map has to be done on the bench and there is no guarentee it will work, some do, some don't and the ones that do work, the gain is not that much.
So, not ALL Bosch EDC diesels are the same.
Baz.
Bollocks the EGR can't be shut down.
Remapping on the bench is about bypassing the write protection. This was the same for all BOSCH EDC17 ECU's regardless of which brand of vehicle they are fitted to. But several tuners can now directly flash EDC17.
EDC17 is EDC17, the coding is the same whether it is fitted to a vw, audi, landrover or bmw.
Shutting down EGR through the map is modifying 3 bytes in the code. If your tuner can't do this, then try another tuner.
The tuners who don't know about these bytes (I have they for one of my cars, but no others) try to shut down EGR by flattening tables in the maps.
This doesn't work.
It doesn't work because they are doing it wrong.
Don't confuse mapping out EGR with blanking EGR either. Blanking the EGR just trips error codes on all modern diesels.
Mapping it out shuts the valve and leaves it there while correcting all the expected airflows back to the no-egr values. No error codes and no problems.
All EDC16's are the same, all EDC17's are the same. Etc.
Yes the average person shouldn't run a performance remap. Especially in a D4 (or any vehicle) used in a hot climate for towing.
I've never met Pete Bell. I make no claims as to what he can or cannot do. Nice that you agree with Redback.
If you want your 720Nm remap. Go ahead and get one. Stop moaning on the internet because someone disagrees with you.
Its my understanding that tuners mostly only modify maps rather than spend the time decoding the program sufficiently to make program changes. Its easy to find and modify maps using readily available software (one of my sons found in excess of 350 maps in a 3.0 ecu program in only about 30 seconds) but it takes a lot of effort to reverse engineer the code to work out what little changes need to be made to effect a change such a switching off egr, which could simply be achieved by setting the minimum temperature for egr to operate as being unattainably high. Pete Bell has a patch for 2007-2009 2.7s to disable EGR which I suspect is not a map change. I hope he works-out a 3.0 code patch.
