Just a wacky idea, to get the air flow directed at the entire filter rather than just one side, fitting a hiclone just upstream may actuallly make it swirl around the whole filter element.

    Yep, I said it. Hiclone...

I've used all of them, K&N, Uni-Filter and paper, like Joel I was seeing dust past the filter and in the intake, after already using the K&N in another car(Ford Explorer), I decided to try Uni-Filter, I was pleased with them in my race bikes so why not.

Well I noticed I was still getting dust past the filter(snorkel fitted) not as much as was getting past with the paper filter, but it was still getting past(to be honest not really a lot)turns out after some head scratching and looking at the lid and body of the airbox, it wasn't sealing properly, so I did what I used to do on my bikes, smeared grease on the airbox and filter and bingo, no more dust past the airbox.

I think that the Uni-Filter was probably sealing the airbox a lot better and that was why the dust was not getting through as much, I continued to use the Uni-Filter until I just got sick of re-oiling it, it was especially annoying on long trips on dusty roads, the K&N is slightly less annoying, but the re-oiling and cleaning can is more expensive than a replacement paper filter, so I have gone back to the paper, more for ease of use really.

I have never had dust past the filter with our D4, I have checked it regularly when on long dusty trips, although the sealing on the D4 airbox is pretty good, the lid is screwed down though(8 to 10 screws) no clips, that may help I imagine.

I did read Bens report, I thought he had guys use the filters for X amount of Ks and then send them to him for analysis, don't remember any bench testing, not saying there wasn't any, I just don't remember it.

More people have had issues with K&N than success off-road, if you're driving in front on a dirt road chances are you'll get very little dust anyway!

There was no point doing a full rebuild on my motor, we stripped and inspected it and bearings and valves were fine. Obviously a full rebuild would be different, as I said.

No need for this Will, ease off

That goes for everyone!! keep this civil please.

    Hi

Not sure about the filtering aspect, but there are plenty of stories of the K&N filters oiling up the MAF on vehicles fitted with them.

That was enough to put me off.

On the 2002 D2 there is an OEM Hiclone in the air filter intake designed to swirl the dust from under the mudguard into the sides of the intake tube and then out the burper. Which means that LR know that under the guard is a crappy place for an intake.
Since I fitted a snorkel , IMHO there is no need for it and a member has posted tha the later ones don't have it so I deleted it with a dremel.

While I am not supporting K&N filters as I sold mine when I read the tests , and also with a MAF the thin K&N oil can foul it, I have had great experience with Unifilter socks in the top of the snorkel on my old RRC.

I did the Tanami, GRR etc etc and was often behind cattle trucks for kilomters. The socks would last about 3 days before becoming so fouled with dust as to cut off air and would need to be cleaned in turps which is pretty messy. However the main paper filter (and the intake side of the sock) was so clean that I didn't have to change it at all in the trip, and it was still perfect when I got home from 3 months in the Northwest.

Now foam filters also came out badlly in the scientific tests but I wonder if they were treated with the correct Unifilter specific sticky viscous oil.
In my case they worked superbly and I still have them and will use them again in the dust.
So maybe horses for courses but I am still not a fan of K&N as I think they are OK on bitumin but the thin oil can migrate and cause MAF problems and also as stated numerous times and scientifically tested, they do not keep out dust. Maybe the oil sticks to the dust in the intake tract and it has a different appearance.
Also re Ryco. Supercheap have Ryco for D2 and they are made in UK . There are two types in stock and one has a fibre type prefilter stuck to the paper filter. I was pretty impressed and may buy a couple.

I once had a K&N filter and, just for a different point of view, I don't like them. Nothing to do with filtering, just too lazy to wash and re-oil. Prefer just to put a new paper element in every now and then.

Finally, just another parting comment on hiclones

    Hi

Talking about pre-filters I had a Donaldson pre cleaner on my series one and it always collected a lot of crap!

Gets a bit feisty here sometimes

I have the TD5 and use paper, dust did get past but was due to poor sealing, I think the Coopers brand has some inconsistent quality issues in the seal area, I have had a couple that differ in the height and width by up to 2mm. Not a lot but seems to affect the sealing to the top lid. I had some dense foam with one side sticky that I cut to size and ran around the top box cover. When the lid went on forced a very good seal and takes out the manufacturing inconsistencies.

I also had a K&N on the previous 300tdi and I thought it did a good job of filtering, when I put this on the TD5, it filtered ok but the oil did migrate to the MAF and caused havoc. So back to paper.............

Does anyone want to buy a cheap K&N better suited to a 300tdi?????

After seeing how they worked in serious dusty conditions on ground keeping equipment there's only one place for k&n finer filter uni filter ect and its in the bin

I'd be willing to bet that all the issues with dust getting through a paper filter (not a cheap **** one) would be all due to sealing issues.

As said above, K&N filters belong in road cars or the bin, in fact might aswell be in the bin as they're pointless as a filter
