I've used all of them, K&N, Uni-Filter and paper, like Joel I was seeing dust past the filter and in the intake, after already using the K&N in another car(Ford Explorer), I decided to try Uni-Filter, I was pleased with them in my race bikes so why not.
Well I noticed I was still getting dust past the filter(snorkel fitted) not as much as was getting past with the paper filter, but it was still getting past(to be honest not really a lot)turns out after some head scratching and looking at the lid and body of the airbox, it wasn't sealing properly, so I did what I used to do on my bikes, smeared grease on the airbox and filter and bingo, no more dust past the airbox.
I think that the Uni-Filter was probably sealing the airbox a lot better and that was why the dust was not getting through as much, I continued to use the Uni-Filter until I just got sick of re-oiling it, it was especially annoying on long trips on dusty roads, the K&N is slightly less annoying, but the re-oiling and cleaning can is more expensive than a replacement paper filter, so I have gone back to the paper, more for ease of use really.
I have never had dust past the filter with our D4, I have checked it regularly when on long dusty trips, although the sealing on the D4 airbox is pretty good, the lid is screwed down though(8 to 10 screws) no clips, that may help I imagine.
I did read Bens report, I thought he had guys use the filters for X amount of Ks and then send them to him for analysis, don't remember any bench testing, not saying there wasn't any, I just don't remember it.
