Do you mean a filter after the main filter? I wish but I don't think there would be enough space. I'd like to replace the main filter with something better but it would take some work to fit it all up and adapt it to my snorkel.

Yeah, spot on. My 110 has a sizeable barrel filter housing (Donaldson), with the cylindrical main element almost filling it, inside of which is a smaller safety element. My safety filter has just the slightest discolouration in a small area, and on the engine side the pipes are spotless

A challenge for you Joel; have an oil sample analysis done when you next change the oil, then post the results here. I'd wager you're engine's been dusted.

I have never had an oil test done but always been keen. How much and where.

When you say "been dusted" are you talking pre tense from the paper filters or current tense from currently using the K&N?

Isuzurovers tests showed the dust that poor filters let through is too small to see any visual accumulation.

But oil analysis will show it and engine wear too.

The big question is why they saw any dust with a real filter? Usually this means a leak path around the filter.

There are a few posts of TD5 air filters leaking,, usually just a smear of grease is enough to stop it,, but by then who knows how much damage has been done,,

I was worried about that but the dusting with the paper filters was over 10,000km ago and no oil usage or excessive blow by at the moment. I've seen TD5s breathing plenty heavier than mine.

Some believe the dust that gets past is often caught in an oily inter cooler. I don't think that's really an effective back stop but I'm still hopping so.

    Happy days.

    Bingo.

High Si in particular will show with a K&N in dusty conditions, as well as elevated Pb, Al and Fe.

Silicon is used in some/most oils as an anti-foaming agent, but it's noticeable on a UOA when it's dust ingestion.

One of the South Africans posted some really good pics probably a decade ago on one of the now defunct UK boards of a 300Tdi with 80,000km of K&N use in predominantly dirt road conditions.

Every bore was totally stuffed, required a maximum re-bore. (and it wasn't a case of soft bores)

isuzurover also recounted the story of an F1 engine manufacturer that used K&N's until the first race in the middle east where they dusted multiple engines from the constant sand blowing across the circuit.
IIRC air flow and face velocities were pretty high, (naturally) but it's a pretty good illustration of what can happen.

Maybe I missed it amongst the hair pulling, but is the OP using a pre-filter at all?
Regardless of filter medium (and personally I don't give a rats what informed people decide to run on their own engines), I'd be using a pre-filter while operating in dust loads high enough to tear normal filters...

Hi Steve, I don't know, so I really can't say, I think it was mentioned back a few pages that they deleted the Hiclone from the airbox when they released the D2a, maybe even LR realised they don't work

OP seems to have gone from paper filter and stock intake to a K$N and snorkle.
So not exactly a valid comparison either.
