    Drowned Disco

    i recently put our 97 v8 disco in the creek. after getting towed out backwards, i pulled plugs out & cranked over to get water out of engine. it ran alright after that, but with weird electrical probs until it dried out (hazard lights flashing, remote locking operating randomly). pulled out seats and carpet when i got home to dry it out.

    questions:
    what should i check/do mechanically to ensure everything is back up to scratch?
    starte motor sometimes doesn't disengage for a second or two after firing, and sometimes won't turn over at all (similar to flat battery). what to do?
    had some overheating probs in traffic on a hot day. i realised that i hadn't heard fan come on 1st thing in morning recently. where should i start to look? (i read with interest the "intermittent overheating" post, and will follow up on some of that).
    clutch makes creaking/groaning noise when releasing since then. what to do?
    since drying out, my remote locking doesn't work & i have to use the key. where is the remote unit located, and how can i trace/fix problem?
    apart from that, all seems fine, but thinking i might invest in a cheaper landy for the next time i want to tackle the bush like that.
    must say i've learnt a valuable lesson about checking/walking thru creek crossings 1st![/img]

    [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img] Well Your photos look like a sad affair, did you get any body damage from the log on the drivers side..

    You should check anything on your drineline you can put oil in basically, and even your bearing should have a quick seeing to. If the photos are any show you look to have been in sandish ground so everything was probably hot when you dunked her, a good bath like that can result in lots of water everywhere. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img] (like I gotta tell you) 8O 8)

    Drain all the old oil from the diff's, gearbox and everything.

    While draining check out underneath for any sand or water that has gotten into somewhere it shouldnt.

    I noticed in the last picture that you were snatched out with what looks like a snatch "rope' rather than a strap, do you have any comments on these vs straps.

    to answer a couple of questions:
    no, didn't get a mark on the body from the log. it was about 1-2" away from body for full length of car. luck!!
    the snatch "rope" wasn't mine, but belonged to the recovery vehicle. he called it a "black snake", but whether that was a nickname or product name i don't know. he owns a 4x4 shop here in melbourne. you can contact him on allterrain4x4@bigpond.com if you want more info. his name is dragan.
    also, i noticed when i pulled out the carpets that there were (unplugged) drain holes under the seat-belt covers on the door pillar. doesn't matter how good the door seals are if you have open holes in the floorpan, i guess.

    For the central locking - does it still centrally unlock with the key, or is it all manual? If it is all manual, it means the relay has died:

    From fuse 1 in the passenger compartment fusebox the feed is connected to the contacts of the four electronic CDL relays in the passenger compartment fusebox.     Did a similar drowning to mine a little while ago. The remote locking gave up, and i had to use the key for entry. A few weeks later it decided to start working again and had worked faultlessly ever since. I had all my diff/gearbox/transfer case oils changed - but all were clean except for a tiny bit of water in the rear diff.

    Worst part about my drowning was an after market cd stacker under the passengers seat, which had to be replaced, and the old one smashed open to get the cds out.

    In the bottom of each door there is a drain hole, and it is worth poking something in there and making sure they are not blocked.....and i put a little fish oil in there once it was dry.
