Discovery II Transfer Box not engaging

    Transfer box notengaging

I recently installed a locking CDL in the front out-puthousing of my 2001 Discovery II with automatic gearbox.

I ordered a CDL update kit (including the CDL linkage) fromAshcroft as the outer casing of my vehicle did not have the differentialcomponents installed.

At the same time I also installed Ashcroft ATB front andrear diff locks.

I took care to follow instructions and advice from otherdisco enthusiasts who kindly shared their knowledge on the internet. I amindebted to you all.

When re-installing the front out put housing, differentialassembly and high/low selector shaft and fork I took particular care that thehigh/low selector shaft and fork was in the correct position and that thefingers of the selection fork are properly seated in the high /low selectorsleeve and that the spines of the rear output shaft were engaged in thedifferential

    Troubleshooting

    1) Thenew diff lock lever and linkage engage nicely to and from the diff lock positionand the centre diff lock light illuminates on the dashboard when engaged.

    2) However the high/low lever is verydifficult to engage. I can get the lever in the high position and with great difficultysometimes in low.

    3) Thetransfer case does not engage. In both the high/low position, in both reverseand drive, the vehicle would move about six inches and then stop and will notmove again.

    Tests carried out

Engine running Hi / Lo lever in eitherHi or Low Position

    1) Gearboxin Parked mode. Car stationary.

    2) Gearboxin Reverse mode vehicle moves 6 inches and then stops won’t move.

    3) Gearboxin Drive Mode vehicle moves 6 inches and then stops won’t move.

    4) Priorto the upgrade I could feel a slight jerk movement in the vehicle when either Dor R was engaged. That does not happen any more.

Engine turned off Hi/Low Lever in eitherHi or Low Position

    1) Gearbox in parked modeunable to move vehicle

    2) Gearboxin Reverse mode I can push the vehicle forward and backwards.

    3) Gearboxin Drive/2/3 mode I can push the vehicle forward and backwards.

    Detent plug ball and spring

I removed and re-installed andadjusted the plug ball and spring several times with no avail. It is difficultto find the happy medium to get the high/low lever to move when setting theball and spring.

    Any advice ?

Thanks for reading this. Anyadvice will be most welcome.

Sometimes I've had to hold the lever for a few seconds to stop it popping out, considering you say it drives for 6 inches

When you say it drives for six inches, what happens after that, does the engine rev up as if in neutral?

The lever does not pop out. I tried to rev the engine no luck.

The Auto needs to be in Neutral when engaging the CDL/H/L range, try driving forward a few metres and then back a few metres put in D, drive forward move the auto to neutral while still rolling forward and try engaging H/L/CDL, you may get a small crunch, but it should go in. Don't forget the auto must be in Neutral when engaging CDL, good luck, Regards Frank.

    Transfer Box Not Engaging

Thanks for all the responses guys.
When I engage in either high or low the vehicle for a second moves in both reverse and drive for a maximum of say one foot and then stops.
While still in drive and pressing down the accelerator the engine revs go up but the vehicle does not move.
It almost feels something is holding the vehicle back( yes the handbrake is disengaged)
What I do not understand is if the vehicle is in either hi/low with the vehicle in either Drive or Reverse with the engine swithed off I can push the vehicle forward and backward.
I would have thought if everything is properly engaged it will not be possible to move the vehicle when the engine is switched off and either H or L is engaged and either D or R is activated.
Looking forward to hearing from you gentlemen!

There is no need for the auto to be in neutral to lock/unlock the cdl. The only caveat in the owners manual is that cdl should only be used when road speed is below 50kmh.

You do need to put the auto in neutral to change between high and low.

Your transfer box is slipping back into neutral.

Reselect Hi range and try again. Usually Low range does not get much use and can get a bit stiff. Sounds like you are only just getting partial engagement of either hi or low range. Keep your hand on the transfer case lever and you should feel it jumping out. Or you can provide pressure with your hand to see if you can keep it engaged.

You may need to adjust the selector mechanism, before that just try and free up the movement of the lever by repeated use while rocking the car backwards and forwards on the engine.

Hi. This sounds similar to the problem I have now. Did you find an answer?
