I'd disconnect the coolers and check the flow of them and the lines. What brand and type of fluid are you running? They don't like some of the more simpler (but still compatible) fluids.

I'm not sure about codes and temps but I'd imagine that it should show something but the OBD code lists online are short and incomplete. What scanner was the mech using? Not many things that aren't specific to LR will see anything but the engine and even then they are very limited in what they'll do, usually just read and clear codes.

I'm assuming Emu Park is in WA? Maybe find a member who has a nanocom for D2TD5 and check it with that. There's a wealth of info through the nanocom you won't get off a std scanner and not just for the auto.

Thanks mate, I'm in Qld, near Rockhampton. I'm not sure what fluid the auto shop put in it, but it was doing the same thing prior to the service. I might try undoing hoses once the watchdog shows up and I have checked temps.

I read somewhere that the sensor should signal the light at 250F, can anyone confirm?

The temp sensor on the transmission cooler is connected to the dash light only. The gearbox ECU has no temp sensor connections - trans fluid warm up is estimated from engine coolant temp.

As a result there can never be fluid temp codes set, only errors relating to communication of engine temp.

It would nice if it were otherwise, but it ain't.

Well I installed the engine watchdog this morning. Took it for a 50km run varying speeds 50-100km/h, gearbox didn't get above 65C.(40C day!)

The auto temp alarm went on at 60C, so its in the sensor or wiring.

Cheaper than a new box.

I've got a D2 TD5 Nanocom for my Disco. I'm currently on holidays at Caloundra, and heading home Northwards next weekend at some stage. We're likely to be staying overnight in Rockhampton (prob at Parkhurst) either Sat or Sun night next weekend. Happy to catch up to try and see what faults its throwing if it's any help.

That would be awesome mate. I have been getting the 3 amigos for a fair while now intermittently, does it read those well?

It can take readings for the 3 Amigoes. I've recently sorted out my own 3 Amigoes woes, but there can be a large variety of causes for that one. I'll PM you my number.

A big thank you to Steve (Pinelli) for running the scanner over my disco on the weekend.

It looks like I will have to do the option B fix, I might start a new thread about the codes.
