Stalling tdi
I've got a issue with my defender. I changed fuel filters recently and since then once or twice a week it stalls on me. I usually prime and it starts, when I prime on first stroke only slight bubbles then all fuel(so I wouldn't think air issue) I've check shutoff solenoid and 12v is there. Sometimes on restart its like it's running on 2 cylinders (or timing out). So I shut down and restart and it runs perfect for a few days. When it runs rough you cannot budge revs it just ticks over you can't lift revs I can just hold open and nothing happens.

I thought maybe fuel injection pump? Do these just fail or can slowly die. How do I test.
Lift pump given that it primes I assume is fine

Fuel filter
Do you have a proper seal with the new fuel filter? Try fitting another new one and see if your problem persists.

check air line from turbo to injector pump for leaks this will stop it from revving out but air bubbles check lift pump

It's not like I have to prime it heaps to get rid of air usually only one pump. But car just won't fire then I'll try again and sometimes it'll fire. But sometimes it takes ages to fire. I thought with limited air in the line the car would self prime and start but it won't just keeps turning over till suddenly it'll start.

I have a spare lift pump so I might throw it on and see how it goes.

Hi Clintox,
You said you've checked for 12V on the fuel solenoid, but check the the connector is clean and tight.
And as has been suggested check the new fuel filter seal.
In my experience the amount of air your getting out each time shouldn't stop a 300Tdi.

so after replacing my fuel separator yesterday as I thought this might be the culprit(its pretty old and seals brittle) I thought this had fixed my issues. but in driving it today Its stopped again. and won't start I have good fuel at fuel filter and fuel at fuel pump, not a lot if any pumps out at injectors whilst trying to turn engine over?
Ideas anyone,
Im just going to hardwire shutoff solenoid to completely eliminate that.
