And did it work or is there the potential for overheat damage to extend past a new built up head and gasket?
Still thinking whether or not I want to do this. But once the head is pulled the cylinder and deck condition should be clear.

The bottom end is pretty robust as long as the timing belt is aligned and you don't have one like Rick130s that chews through bearings.
Replacing the thermostat and any suspect hoses is also a good idea.
I had the misfortune to fit a (new) thermo fan hub that was dodgy, but that is another story...
