In Canberra at the moment there are not even M12 1.5 taps available - neither of the two major tool shops had any - ended up using one out of an old cheap chinese set that I had. Also at the moment there are no M11 bolts to be had so the use of M11 tapes and dies is a bit academic.

Using a die to cut the 8mm thread on the new stud. My old set is not up to scratch in cutting HT steel but my neighbours set was slowing doing the job. If I use mild steel there shouldn't be any issues.

Canberra is really the pitts for anything related to cars and industrial tools and equipment - even worse this time of year as the place is closed - the one mobile repairer is off until mid January.

M11 is a pretty rare animal I may have one ile have a look in the morning if your still stuck

I have 11 mm x 1.5 taps and dies in stock. all my taps and dies are high speed steel, machine shop quality. Also have four pitches in 12 mm.

The odd number nuts and bolts are pretty hard to find in this country in spite of them being in common use on Jap bikes and wog cars. I don't sell fasteners. Find a specialist.

Carbon steel taps and dies (or chrome tungsten steel, the marketers term for cheap crap t & d's) are only suitable for cutting new threads on mild steel or brass or for cleaning threads. Get HSS tools for tool and high tensile steels, stainless, heat treated aluminium alloys, titanium, plastics particularly those with abrasive filler.

I tried to get some mild steel M12 1.5 bolts today but no luck so I got a length of 9/16th threaded mild steel rod. We decided to make an insert rather than a M12/M8 stud.

We turned the rod down to 12mm and with some difficulty with the basic managed to thread it and then a drill and thread the hole.

I will see how it works tomorrow.

So as indicated any ideas where I might get these from.

I ended making an insert from the threaded rod and it worked well - managed to get the repro manifold on despite like many repro stuff it not quite fitting.

The bit that I actually needed was a 'Time-sert', made by a company called 'Wurth' (thanks to Ian for the advice).

I couldn't find any at the time but walking out of a local bearing shop they had them sitting on their display wall.
