My first thought is oil cooler or oil cooler orings starting to let go.
I have a weird problem with my TD5. I sure do hope it is not the head gasket - a good second-hand head was installed on my TD5 about 25000km ago (before I bought it) in February 2012.
October last year I started hearing gurgling from the heater matrix in the morning - i.e. air in coolant. I had a combustion gas test done at radiator place done - negative. I had the thermostat replaced on their advice.
Drove up to Kgalagadi National Park (3000km round trip) - still gurgling. Radiator started leaking a little bit on the way. Also had a leak from the top hose. Got back home safely in any case - watching the madman all the time. Temperature never goes up, well not unless you gun in up on a hill, and then it went to 94 degrees.
Radiator was replaced in November (found to be leaking), all pipes taking off, connections cleaned, new hose clamps installed. Got the TD5 back - no more gurgling in the morning.
Did 500km round trip in December - with lots of long hills... Next morning I have lots of gurgling behind the dash, and leaking coolant from the pipe exiting the water pump. Tighten the stupid clamp, it strips, replace the clamp. Bleed the thing. Also added a bottle to catch anything from the overflow pipe from the coolant reservoir.
Drove back home gingerly. No problems at all, no overheating. Next morning at home - gurgle gurgle. Pipes still quite hard even although the engine is cold. I loosened the cap to release the pressure before I left.
Left for a week with another vehicle, on coming back I moved the TD5 from one parking bay to another. Whoa, what's this on the ground now? Green blood? Pipes rock hard, coolant overflowed into the catch bottle :'( I open the pressure cap, and it spits out coolant even although it is cold. Not good I think. Left it standing there.
Came back a week later - and now it does not spit out coolant. Drove it around a bit, bled it again, but it still gurgles. I can't see any oil in the coolant, but I do see a few black flecks (very small bits) in there. Got one out on my finger, and it smeared black - carbon?
The car has *never* overheated with me, starts without any hiccups, and as far as I know it does not lose coolant - although this is difficult since it leaks it out.
This is not funny at all, I spent considerable time checking out this TD5 before I bought it. Oil analysis the works.
Any ideas? Was suggested to me to change the pressure cap, but I can't see how that will help?
I am planning to have an oil analysis done to see if any coolant in oil.
My first thought is oil cooler or oil cooler orings starting to let go.
What you describe is the classic TD5 head gasket symptoms.
I have not yet heard of any gas analysis testing positive until the problem is glaringly obvious.
The oil in the coolant could be associated or a secondary problem with the oil cooler as already mentioned.
No oil in the coolant that I could see - just some black spots drifting around. Looks more like pieces of carbon that oil to me - if you wipe them across something it makes a streak.
Can't think that the oil cooler would make "gas" in the coolant?
I also have a feeling this is (currently) a very small leak from the combustion side into the coolant, and it only really leaks under boost. Don't understand the once-off event where it pressurized when cold though?
Sorry! sounds awfully like a head gasket to me,same symptoms, head recon.etc and all good.
I Know you have had a 2nd hand head, but my bet is that it has,so far,a small leak which will only get worse if you leave it.
Trev.
Yes oil cooler the specks will get worse. I left mine for a few weeks specks turned into little bits then I went to the shops and it turned into horrid emulsified mess to deal with. I got one from Island 4 X 4 As for your noise does sound like something to do with the head or head gasket. Hopefully the only the gasket...

I checked the TD5 again last night - pipes still quite hard after I drove a very small distance last Tuesday night. Moved it to the other parking spot, and tried opening the cap - same pressure problem as before when it just blows out water for a while. I collected about a litre of coolant from the overflow pipe (the coolant goes out there if you half open the cap). If I opened the cap too much it blew out from the bottle like a coke that was shaken...
:'( I should start saving up for the head gasket I suppose. I can't think of any other way that air can get into the system.
The only thing that I cannot understand is this - I bleed it, you drive it and you hear nothing gurgling. Let it stand overnight; the pipes are still hard the next morning. When you start it - gurgle gurgle. I suppose the gas is very small bubbles in the coolant while you are driving, and it settles overnight in one big bubble.
By the way - how much work is it to change the oil cooler once the head is off? Much less than with all the bits on I would think?
the head itself makes no difference, if youve removed the turbo as part of getting the head off, that makes a substantial difference.

Hmm - ok. That's a bit sad. Thought I would save a bit on labour with the head off already. I don't want that to fail next and then I have to have all the coolant bits cleaned again. How much labour is this more or less in hours?
I think Hendrik (on this forum) did it quite a few times and he alleged he did it in about 20 minutes....
