Smile Air con gurus, pls advise

2004 D2 seems to have a problem with ac compressor clutch.

Can I partly dismantle the front of the compressor to check/change the coil leaving the comp in place?

In Melb, where would be a possible source of clutch coil?

    TIA

Mmmmmh, that's a tricky one, miss pat...

I am not an AC guru, however have managed to dismantle a few units to the extent you describe. It is possible that a few "special" tools may be required, however I have managed without. There will be a few nuts and bolts, and maybe a few circlips... Holding pulley and hub/clutch may be tricky.

The last one I did, the compressor body was a bit stuffed where the collapsed bearing had permitted rubbing, and beyond repair. I purchased a whole wreck for less than the price of a compressor, and fitted it up...

The AC bloke was surprised that I did the "right" thing, and left the old unit connected, next to the replacement, for refrigerant recovery and reconnection/re gassing in accordance with legislation.......

As long as you do not disturb any pipe unions or fittings, or break open the compressor body and release refrigerant, you are within the law.

As for finding a coil and stuff like that, others may be able to assist.

    Cheers,

    Gumnut

Yes Gumnut is right,it can be done , a 10mm spanner or socket ,external circlip pliers and hope the clutch plate is not stuck tight on the shaft splines.
Before you go that far why are you picking the coil, to electriclly test it, connect a multimeter in line at the plug on the wire to the compresser put the multimeter on the amp setting and turn the key and A/C on but dont start the engine. If there is more than 4.5 amps draw then the coils have shorted out, no current is a broken wire or faulty relay .A hot wire from the battery to the compresser should have it engage if not then coils are faulty, also make sure there is 12 volts under load
These nippondenso compressers also have a bad habbit of wearing the compresser nose where the bearing runs and it touches the coils and cooks them resulting in a ruined clutch and compresser.

Suppliers Cooldrive Thomastown and Box hill
Take the parts as a sample, and yes I am one of their customers. Also try Ingrams

    Cheers Steve

Hi Pierre There is a aircon joint off Dorsest road, Boronia. You trun down the 1st street after Avanti marine. it's a few factories down on the left, KLH Auto or something like that.
I had my disco 1 A/C clutch replaced there a few years ago. They machined down a Toyota clutch plate and fitted it, it was a good job and they are seasonable in price.
I always go there for a regas. Just know where it is so I call in.Sorry I don't have the phone number.
But it's not far when your in FTG.
    Regards,
    Mario
