Has anyone compound turbocharged a TD5?

Two stroke rotary inlet valves are a completely different animal and not transferable to 4 strokes. I played with them when I was much younger.

The only successful 4 stroke engine with rotary valves, I know of, was a British motorcycle, whose name I just can't recall at the moment (damb you Rick, I nearly had it and now it's going to distract me all afternoon). :D

There are a few truck diesel engines with hydraulically operated valves and variable timing. The 6.0 litre V8 used in F trucks and the 4.5 litre V6 derivative from Navistar for example.

Edit both those examples use compound turbos BTW.

I have one of the compound turbos (from the 4.5 Litre Navistar) for my 4BD1T pic below when I was making a manifold.

Used to run a rotary valved Class Oz Parilla way, way back, but as John said, a very different animal to a four stroke version.

The CIK classes pulled crazy revs, your 21-22000rpm is right!

Also Bristol Hercules aircraft engine had rotary (aka sleeve) valves

Finally remembered the name 'Rudge' for the motorcycle with rotary valves.

IIRC their conventional head had 4 valves (single cylinder) which was far ahead of their time.

I remember my father used to have a Rudge race bike, that was also a long time ago.

The engine behind, and to the left of, the one you took a photo of looks a lot more interesting.

could you just bolt up one of those 3L Iveco compound setups on a 300tdi?
