Hi guys,
seriously considering using the head studs instead of bolts on my 3.9 38D engine. The two kits available are 124-4003 14 bolt and 157-4301 for 10 bolt heads. At this point I can justify the expense of the 124-4003 kit but I have the 10 bolt heads and may want to reuse on 14 bolt heads at a later date. Who has used the earlier kits on the later heads and have there been any issues? From what I've been told the studs in the earlier kit aren't long enough and there is risk them pulling out of the block if it has softened. Anyone had any problems?

I've used them on a 10 bolt head with no problems, but need to check the number of the kit I ordered, its at home and I'm at work

Just be aware that the older kit is actually for the old Buick engine where the newer kit is specifically for the later Rover engines.

As far as I am aware not much but the Rover engine continued to evolve and I also heard that the older studs could pull out on occasion, maybe ham fisted operators but nevertheless if torqued up to ARP recommended torque these is a risk. That is why I purchased the later studs specifically made to fit the Rover engine.
On aspect to consider is, if ARP thought the old studs were good enough why did they then release the new ones.

I used the old kit on my 3.9 with 10 stud heads with no problems.
I did notice that the studs did not bottom but ended about 5MM from the end of the hole but absolutely no problem caused by this.

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with the 124-4003 kit and torque it to 65 ft lbs which seems to be the figure recommended by many instead of the ARP figure of 80lbs.

Pete how did you come up with this number as I have been going through the same considerations. I had picked on about 70 ft lbs which is similar to your figure but I came up with that number after talking with a few people but none had any confidence on how well it would work.
