Pity that 80 year old bush Mechanic does'nt live in Perth... I like his approach.

Has anyone done the figures on whether it's viable to buy a set of gauges, pump and whatever else is required to re-charge one's own system ?

I'd guess a few 'fixes' over the next 5 to 10 years for two older cars.

    - I'm not familiar with the hands-on / nitty-gritty of re-gassing.

I looked up pricing for bits and pieces a while ago and of course it will vary but I reckon your ROI would be 2-3 recharges. More than 3 recharges and you'd be better off with your own.

Very tempting..Same argument I've used on myself for a variety of things/tools I've bought over the years. Last one was a 50mm hydraulic terminal crimper, for two wires in 12 months. but it's there in case we need it....

Got a bloke coming around this arvo, re-gas the Mazda for $150 with a HC. Need A/C for the week-end flying lesson.
    - Will get him to look at Sarah whilst he's here.

Edit: The 'Eskimo' has been and gone, arrived 2 minutes early, injected his HyChill 'and the coldth is between 0 and 1 degree, depending on which angle you read the dial ... Sarah did well, 4 degrees so he suggested we leave her alone, as the moving air whilst driving will possibly bring it down a bit further. He was'nt overly impressed with the (lack of) air flow through the condenser or the electric fans.
    - Nothing new there.
