    You will have to know how many pulses per rotation.AFAIR from many years ago there are 6 from an RRC or D1 pulse generator.
    Look mate it would be FAR FAR simpler to get a second hand Land Rover one.
    What speedo do you intend to match to it? if a Lada one then OK.

    nah. planning to keep it authentic. i've ordered switec motors. i'll throw away almost everything and refit the needles onto the motors. don't think writing firmware would be a problem. so it actually doesn't matter how many pulses are there per rotation.what really matters is how many meters on my standard wheels it makes per one rotation of the transducer's shaft.
    another frightening task is fitting a trigger wheel onto the pulley (older type with many belts) for tacho... hope it won't introduce any unbalance or shift the pulley from its planes (the wheel is 5mm thick)

    I looked into putting steppers in the back of RRC instruments about a year ago. There is enough clearance to drive all four needles from steppers. The speedo is the trickiest one, which is much easier if you throw away the whole mechanical unit and just mount an LCD behind each cut-out to display odometer and trip.

    well, so far i know nothing about the way odometer works. i'd try to keep the original one if the torque of those motors is sufficient and i can somehow handle the space restrictions... any info on the ratio of vehicle speed to the transducer's rpm (the one from mechanical speedo) would still be helpful.

    If you're just replacing a cable with a transducer and stepper; then a bench test before install will show you when you've got the stepper turning the same rpm as the transducer.

    For me the odo and cable are fine, but the speedo mechanism isn't accurate (needle takes too long to react to changes in speed). Which is a problem when the traffic police here decided to fine anyone travelling more than 4km/h over any limit.

    well, odo was one of the reasons for such decision: as the feed for odo and speedo is the same (cable), and the speedo's mistake in my car can easily be of 20-30 km/h, and this error is intermittent and inconsistent, all this makes odo readings very unreliable (Because of this I can't even tell what my actual fuel consumption is )

    I didn't get your remark regarding the bench tests. I'd probably have to install the transducer, power it on and add sort of LED to its signal pin, and then move the vehicle for one meter, counting the number of blinks…
    Probably there are easier solutions (e.g. looking up the specs for the mechanical speedo)...

    okay
    had to cut it into two halves as the axis seemed to be too short:

    now i'm going to cut an aluminum plate and glue it to the plastic case. then I'd use a sealant to fix the whole thing on the transfer box (there seemed to be some bracket on it, but I didn't get how to get it off the transfer box. or is it bolted on?

    this thing gives 6 pulses per rotation.
    i'd probably need to live an isp header to alter coefficients… not sure if that would work with the stepper motor connected to the µc…
