I just pickey up 20ltrs of VMX 80 for $120 from Green goanna oils is Granville.
Going to change all - today.
SO are you blokes saying that you can run it in the Manual gearbox rather than ATF?
Mick
that you can
i believe many of the landrover gearbox rebuilders will not warrant their work unless you use vmx80 or penrite light gear oil.
I know firshand the guys at british offroad swear by it as well as it was one of the first things they recommended when i got my disco some years back.
I've been using Castrol VMX-M 75W/85 for the past 6 years in the gearbox since having it rebuilt by Maxi-drive I change the oil every 20,000ks it has done approx 140,000ks since rebuild with no problems, I use gear oil in the transfer case (County 110 Isuzu 3.9 Santana 5 speed with the full monty done on the g/box)
I was thinking of XGO75/90 which is a Synthetic Mineral Mix . Ill be running that in all cept gearbox soon
Mick
I use Penrite 10 tenths 75/90 full synth race oil in my transfer case and Castrol SAF-XA 75/140 full synth in the diffs. Castrol reckon it's good for 300K Km in rockwell and eaton diffs in road trains, it's also what alot of the V8 supa cars use in the Holinger gear boxes as well, I think Merc and Jag use it in their race cars as well, you can't use it in a syncro box however. I have used Valvoline dura gear 70 /80 in the 5 speed for as long as I have had it. I am considering Castrol syntrax or syntrans at the next change however. The diffs and tranfer case seem to run cooler on synth.
There is this: Discovery Clutch Trouble
Just as an aside - the Castrol MTX(Multitrax) is the only oil that does not break down in the diff of my MotoGuzzi. All other gear oils Ive tried turn to light brown mush.
Geez, this is a dig from the archives !
BTW, we don't have those wussy boy dampers on Defenders ;)
Multitrax is a bit heavy for an R380 or LT77 as it's a 75w-90, although I know of a few blokes that use Syntrax or Redline MT90 and are happy, and I'm currently trialling Torco RTF, but I'm non-plussed with it's gearchange performance when cool over the last few days.
:Rolling::Rolling::BigThumb:
On ya rick, I was about to ask "What flamin clutch damper" Interestingly my R380 ticked over 52,000k yesterday and it has a constant cow on 1 - 2 upchange and ocassionally on the down change too. I think I've got the LR MTF94 in it at the moment which was put in in Tassie. I think its just the characteristic of the R380 Box. If its not then I'm in for a rebuild soon
A blast from the past indeed!
Bored Rick?
:p
would be interesting to revisit those gearboxes that
changed fluids to see how they got on,,
