Tdi Clutch Damper

Hi all!!!
Life is busy at the moment, work is taking up a s&@T load of my time, hence my lack of post's!!!
I am currently setting the Disco up for a trip next week, and in doing so have noticed today that the gear change from 2nd to third is catching, only on the up change, when changing down she seem's to cope?
My wife who uses it to run around commented recently and I just put it down to you know what!!!!! ( Women Driver's) but she complained of the change from 1st to 2nd?
Could it be the clutch damper!!!! As I can only find the problem in 2nd to 3rd? There has been comments made that the Manual gear box has some weak points? All views welcomed with open ears 8)

Hi Crawfy,

My '97 300Tdi has had a slight 'catch' on the 2-3 upchange the whole time we've owned it - 89,000 to 162,000 km. It never seems to get any better or worse. I doubt it's the clutch damper, just a slighlty 'slow' 3rd gear synchro. I'd just make sure it's correctly filled with the recommended fluid.

I've used Dextron II ATF while I've had the vehicle but recently a LR dealer filled it with now recommended MTF94 - but this doesn't seem to have made any difference either. I just live with it.

Crawfy,

Mine suffers from first to second and on the rare occassion second to third.

Usually when cold and in slow traffic. 140,000 km and has done for a while.

I'll watch with interest before I drop my gearbox to check out a slight front end seal leak.

Is that Leo109 from LREnthusiast?

Also have that problem with 2nd to 3rd. Mainly when cold though. Had thought about changing gear oil to see if that made any difference but that's about as far is its got so far!!

Will be interested to hear if you come up with an answer.

A change of oil will almost certainly do wonders if you're still using ATF. My freshly rebuilt gearbox was terrible on ATF, but when I changed to Castrol VMX80 things improved significantly. Granted, it's still a Landrover gearbox and is baulky when cold and sticky when really hot, but that's a huge improvement on what it was like with ATF.

There are many alternatives to MTF94, VMX80 is just one of them and is easy to find (even at BigW) and reasonably priced. I know others on this forum have used Penrite MGOXL with good success.

There is an excellent list of alternatives here

From what I've read on other forums, the Redline oil is about the best. Only problem is that it's hard to find in Australia and quite expensive (about $100 for 3 litres).

Why don't you just try VMX80 or MGOXL. It might make a big difference and for around $30 it's not a lot to lose.

Just read the guff on the Castrol website about VMX80. Think I'll give it a try this weekend. Will let people know what the results are.

Cheers.

It's interesting to note that I changed the transfer & Gearbox oil and I still have the problem, if I double clutch the clutch the gear change is smooth, so I' thinking maybe it is the Hydraulic Damper? I have just recieved an email from a mate from England who say's this has been a known problem on the Tdi"s?
I priced a new Damper and considering the cash spent on the new head!!!!! I'll give it a go!!!
So I'll keep you posted as I believe the gearbox is sound!!!!
