Where do the wading plugs go ?

Call me a mechanical neanderthal . ops: :?
I am good on electrical and body type things but when it comes to the big chunky bits in my car I am somewhat lost.

It says in the handbook you need to fit plugs in the timing cover and flywheel housing but I have no idea what the !%^$# they look like. :x

Is there anyone out there that has some monkey sheets so a monkey like me can fit these plugs, or at least a picture so I know what I am looking for.
I spent some time crawling around under the car but I can not see where I can fit these two plugs.

They are just a treaded plug, one screws into the hole at the bottom of the timing cover (TDI only) and one in the hole on the bottom of the bell houseing. Don't leave them in all the time however, if you get an oil leak the timing cover fills up with oil and wrecks the belt and if the rear main seal goes you wet the clutch. You can buy them at LR parts places.

Rob,
I think the plugs are only used during water crossings.
ie. fit them just before, and remove them just after.

OK, just consulted my RR workshop manual.
Quote:
1. The flywheel housing can be completely sealed to exclude mud and water under severe wading conditions, by means of a plug fitted in the bottom of the housing.

2. The plug is screwed into the housing adjacent to the drain hole, and should only be fitted when the vehicle is expected to do wading or very muddy work. When the plug is in use it must be removed periodically and all oil allowed to drain off before the plug is replaced.

I've just bought a couple ready for the trip up north. They're worth stuff all. Plan on fitting them once I hit the rough stuff north of Cooktown. Take them out once I get back on the black stuff on the way home.

TDI car have a different bellhousing there is no spot to screw them when not in use, this extra hole is only on v8 cars.

Goblin I'll not call you a mechanical neanderthal - I was not far from posting the same question.

A picture of where they go would be a great help I'm sure.... anyone ?

And shaunp - I have a TDI Defender so when I don't need my plugs I'll just leave 'em in my glovebox - if only I could find where Land Rover put it.... Called the dealer....
Their response to the question...
"Td5 Defenders probably do not require wading plugs...there may be one in the bell housing {a big bulbous bit near the firewall on the rear of the gearbox}..."

I think I'll have another look tomorrow when the sun comes up.

It sounds like Tdi defenders and disco's need them. I remember my 95 Tdi300 disco had two.

I checked when my handbook was printed. 2002 !
I seem to remember Td5's being introduced about 1999-ish.

Seems there is a fairly decrative spark plug wrench in the kit too. Unless anyone can tell me that there are some additional sparkplugs fitted to my diesel engine (that much I do know)
Also seems LR do not update their customer tool kits or manuals all too often.

So

Does anyone want to buy a couple of wading plugs and a spark plug wrench.

Looks like that high-country snow weekend will be no trouble then

Yep, good to see the usual definitive answer from a LR dealer....

According to 'our' resident Guru (Fred) for a TD5 a wading plug is needed in the bellhousing and some blue tak or chewy put in the hole at 6 oclock
in the bellhousing. Apparently the rear diff breather is also a bit short
and for deep water it needs to be extended up higher. ( Freds words)

Like you I have never been able to figure out where the plug goes ??
