Turbo/hose failure?

That sounds like a stuffed turbine shaft bearing, but you say it felt OK when you spun it with your finger, was it smooth or lumpy? it is hard to diagnose a problem from afar.
I would remove the Intercooler and check for blockages or holes, rinse it thoroughly with petrol, wash out with water and let dry in the sun, then finally give it a blast of compressed air.
I would also check that the wastegate actuator is working and intact, if all seems ok I would check to see if you are getting oil into the turbo bearings.
You can disconnect the drain back (to sump) hose, put a container under the turbo and have someone start the engine, oil should flow out of the drain hole, if it does shut engine off immediately, if no oil you have a problem and the turbo may need a rebuild or replacement, good luck, Regards Frank.

Just seen your latest post as I posted my last post, you can buy replacement turbine kits already assembled, just a matter of bolting your old housings on, or you can buy an original for around $1800, or a complete Chinese turbo for around $400 on eBay.
Before everyone jumps on the bandwagon and says they wouldn't touch a Chinese turbo with a six foot pole, my Son who used to work for a large reputable diesel injector pump and turbo repairer was talking to his former boss about fitting a chinese turbo to his Transit van.
He said why not, he could find no problems with them and he had fitted plenty for customers over the past few years and has not had a single failure, more than he could say for some of the big brand names, Regards Frank.

only problem is this turbo never came on anything in Australia AFAIK :(

not the same turbo, mines VNT and has a different manifold flange.

I think the turbine part can be rebuilt with the T25 stuff though.

Now, should I ask why this happened??? Did it eat something from the engine?

I don't know why it broke, it doesn't look like anything has come from the engine, if it had there would be heaps more damage.
If your engine is a 300TDi these ebay turbos will fit, you just use the end pieces of your existing manifold and fit them to the new turbo housing, Regards Frank.

Engine is a HS 2.8TGV (like a 300Tdi but with differences)

Ohhh, now I see the light, will a 300TDi exhaust manifold fit, if so get an old 300 manifold and fit a chinese 300TDi turbo, will get you running and you could buy 4+ Chinese turbos for one VNT Garrett, which are made in Brazil anyway, Regards Frank.

Is there enough play in the turbine end to get the blades to touch the housing?
What's the max EGT you run?

Could have eaten something from the engine, but I've seen references to that sort of failure being turbine overspeed related too.

Pity you don't have a boost gauge. Would have been interesting to know if boost was affected prior to the failure.
