My understanding was that they were only 1/2 a car and that 1/2 was the engine and the boot, huge, designed to carry a 44 of fuel :? :?

I've never seen P38 on the RR label.

There must be some differences between the first and second generations... differentials even?

AFAIK, the diffs were different. The normal full floater setup that LR have traditionally used was dropped for a semi floater, and this is also seen in the D2. Therefore no more sexy Maxi hubs for these babies. The diff itself I think also has a different flange and as far as I know the Crownwheels are not compatible with the rover diff, though I may be corrected here. ARB have different part numbers for their lockers for this reason. The 4.0l V8 was given a 2 planetary gear diff, and the 4.6V8 was given the 4 planetary gear diff for some extra strength over the usual breaker units. The 4 planetary I think also goes into the rear of the current defender in place of the Salisbury.

Maybe they could only fit a 22gal drum in the boot.
