    lt77s oil? what to use

what oil should i use in the lt77s, when i changed the oil and cleaned the

filter, there was a **** load of synchro in the filter (140000km old box),

and it had atf in it. i filled it with extra light penrite 75/80 gear oil, but the

next morning was really cold and she crunched into second twice untill it

warmed up (which had not happened before), when warm she was ok. i

didn't like that so i dropped the fresh penrite and went back to the

specified atf. she still isn't what she was though?

is the extra light better for the life of the box even though it struggles when cold, or should i stick woth atf? :?: :?: :?:

That's exactly the same problem I had with Penrite MGOXL, a bit too baulky when cold. It's strange because I know others on this forum have had excellent results with it. I use Castrol VMX 80, and things have improved significantly, especially compared to the ATF that was in the gearbox originally.

There's a discussion on the subject here

Many Specialist Land Rover mechanics recommended the use of AFT for the LT77 when I bought my '88 RR 6 years ago (with 220K km). I continued to use ATF for awhile, then tried the Penrite Light Gear Oil for a drive from Melb to Perth. I found this oil was still too heavy and made gear changes sticky and awkward. I spoke to the Penrite people about it and they discouraged the use of regular ATF as it loses its viscosity at high manual g/box temps. Since then I've used Penrite Synthetic ATF. It's not expensive and everything seems to go well in all weather / temp conditions. The RR is now up to 400K km and running fine.

I think I paid $40 for 4 litre container, last replaced it about 40K km ago.

The typical crunch from first to second and the occasional baulk from second to third. Usually when cold. When the box is warm then the shift changes. All this with auto trans oil. Interestingly this is accentuated in low range.

Replaced today with Castrol VMX80. I'll see how she goes and let people know.

A mate of mine just put VMX80 in the gearbox of his Ford Courier on my suggestion. It cured his cold shifting problems. He said it was better immediately and continued improving each day as he drove it more. (He thinks I'm a good bloke now for that tip  )

yep,, changed from vmx to penright light because of this,,, seemed to help at first,, still a difficult change when hot,, I think its just a slow synchro,,

My second days driving with the VMX.

Observations so far: still crunches on the odd occasion when cold. It was never consistant and this hasn't changed.

The scary thing is that I can usually sense when it's going to. A bit like the telepathy that develops in a long term relationship. 8O

    2nd gear crunch

    G'day

The only Land Rover gearbox I have ever driven (and I've driven lots) that does not snick or crunch 2nd when it is cold is my army rebuilt Series IIa box. All the others have to some extent and at some times. The Series IIa does not crunch because it does not have synchro and I double declutch.

My LT77 Disco did (at 41,000km), my R380 Defender did (from new), several Discoveries (new) at work did (one was really bad) and all the LT95s I have had including the current one that has only 109,000km from new do too.

Once they warm up, they improve greatly though the dear old LT95 can be a bit or a beast sometimes - mainly because the engine takes so long to loose revs between gear changes.

My solution is to double declutch for the first couple of changes in the morning. From then on, there is usually no problem.

As for what oil? I tend to use whatever Castrol recommends on their web site http://www.castrol.com.au

The main thing with the LR boxes is to make sure that anyone who changes the oil for you knows what to use and that they do not put 80/90 Hypoid in your gearbox as has happened to me recently. Luckily I checked. One sniff and I knew it had the wrong stuff.

    Michael
