I've broken the syncro clips in hellspawn.............again. So I've got the gearbox out of her and I've a project series 2A that is a drive gear on the chassis only.
Had a look at both and there are some obvious things between the two.
The clutch slave position. Series two slave is on the drivers side mounted vertically on it's own bracket and uses a shaft to link up to the clutch.
Series three slave is on the passenger side and is mounted into the bellhousing on the motor side just under the starter and works the release fork directly without a link shaft.
Other little differences like the series two gear knob is flat and round whereas the series three is about the size and shape of a golf ball but wouldn't a good thing to rely on.
Suffix normally only shows where in the sequence the box was built. Some suffix show minor modifications the factory made throughout production as in the example of 'D' had a higher reduction for low range than 'A'. Though that wouldn't tell much between the series unless you did a numbers check.
As for the motor check for an inspection plate on the right hand side above where the flywheel would be on the bell housing or if seperated whether there is timing marks in the flywheel. Timing was set through this inspection plate on the series 2s.
Series three had no inspection plate rather markings on the crank pulley and pointer on the timing cover. It was a common mod. to change old motors to series three spec. on the basis of easier to set ignition timing than the earlier method.
Hope this gives some help to identifying the mystery setup.
