Tdi300 Oil recommendations?

What oils are best for the Tdi300 in the forums opinion?

I will be doing 5000k changes on a motor with 165,500 klms on it

Caltex Delo 400
or
Penrite HPR Diesel-15
or
Shell RimulaX

would be my picks,

what say you tdi owners out there?

Castrol say Magnatec.... anybody using it and has nice or bad things to say?

300Tdi oil.

Incisor. I used Penrite HPR Premium (does that sound right?) in my 300 Tdi Disco and changed the oil and filter religiously at 5000klms. When I sold it with 144000 on the clock it still burnt no oil ....... but did drip a bit on the drive.
When I worked on Caterpiller equipment we used Shell Rimula, which again the engines seemed to last well with it, although we changed by hours of use rather than klms.
Now I've got a Td5 Defender and use Magnatec which again seems to be an excellent oil.
But the main stealer doesn't change the filter every time! Doesn't need it according to them, but I think the cost of a filter isn't worth considering in the long term for engine longevity.
I think it's worth using good oil even if it does cost a few bob more than some of the junk on supermarket and the cheap add on parts suppliers shelves.

Hi Dave
I use the Penrite HPR Diesel in the Trytoo and the 202 Landy(see my previous post RE Diesel oil in a petrol Rangie),seems to keep good oil pressure rite up to oilchange time. There is a lighter grade Penrite diesel oil,but I think the Penrite HPR 15 you refer to may be a petrol oil.
I think as long as you are getting a premium grade/brand oil as compared to asuupercrappp style cheapie oil you shouldnt go wrong.Everyone has their favorites, there probably isnt a huge deal of difference between the quality oils.

If you use the right grade and change it at half the specified service interval you can't be to far from the mark. Oils are made to comply with agreed standards.

The rest is brand loyalty 8)

pretty much sums up my feelings as well as it has always served me well.

it's finding the right grade for a 300tdi with that sort of mileage on it.

is 10w50 (expensive) going to be better or worse or an overkill compared to 15w40 (more affordable)?

I'm using Penrite Light Diesel, but that has now been replaced by the HPR Diesel 15. Both are good value semi-synthetic oils which are about spot on for older technology engines like the Tdi, but no good whatsoever for TD5.

Magnatec might be OK for a TD5, but is not a good choice for Tdi compared to specific diesel oils. Any of those you listed would be a better choice for your Tdi than Magnatec.

We used to use Dello in all the diesel machinery about the place, turboed and not. Always they would start with good pressure then fall away when worked hard. So on a summers' day there'd be 1800rpm on board with about 15~20lb of oil pressure after starting with 40lb. Used to always bother me to look down and see such a low reading when everything else is up at higher working levels. Caltex seemed sure it was okay.

Always seemed a bit light for an oil even when just sitting in the drum however the grader is still going and it's almost vintage with nothing done to it apart from grease and oil change. Have no idea how many hours it's done as about the only two things that reliably work are the fuel and temp gauges.

Was told once don't need alot of oil pressure by a diesel mechanic, beg to differ as I believe oil pressure does more than make the needle go around the gauge dial.

I have generally used Penrite 40/70 in my vehicles. Seems to keep everything smooth, quiet and holds viscosity at high temps. Had the Mazda since new and is over the 4 thousand k mark. Starting to use a bit of oil between services now (the valve guides leak) and with oil being cheaper than a rebuild for now, don't mind if it does.

Penrite is my fav.....probably is a bit brand loyalty however when you are onto a good thing you tend to stick to it.

Penrite lite diesel is what you want or just their normal diesel oil if think the engine is tied . Remember that one of the jobs an oil has to do is clean the engine, oils that are made for petrol engines don't have the same detergent packaged and are really not suitable to run in oilers. TD5 engines have a centrafuge type oil filter to take the crap out but the tdis don't, hense they need some more detergent. You can get the old spinners of Cruisers at the wreckers and stick them inline with the oil cooler , I may do this to Dad's new TDI.
