    Front hub and swivel problem

I have noticed a bit of play in my 98 Discos front passenger wheel and a distinct noise when climbing gutters etc or on hard lock. It was also scraping the disc pads after braking. I pulled the hub off to check/replace bearings and in the process noticed a nice puddle of oil forming under the swivel pin bearing housing (no visible leak before). Is this a sign that I have to pull the swivel unit down and would a seal kit fix my problems? the final drive shaft seems to have a fair bit of play at the moment with the hub off.

Did you undo the two bolts that hold the top swivel in place?
These two stop the swivel housing from moving inwards at the bottom away from the seal on the back of the swivel hub.

Its a normal thing and once the swivel is back in place and the bolts are torqued up it should reseal.

I undid the two bolts that hold the brake line attached to the calliper

I did the same thing a while ago when I was in a hurry. Result - swivel emptied all its oil onto the driveway. I put a jack under the other one when I did it next.

Yes, somewhat dubious design there, which I discovered a couple of weeks back. If you want to remove the calipers, you are forced to either disrupt the brake lines (by undoing at this fitting), or remove the top swivel pin and drop the oil out of the swivel housing...

There's got to be a better way...

I don't think there is, well there isn't. But.....

you only really have to disrupt the brake line the first time you move the caliper, once the line is off cut a slot the bracket to facilitate easy removal in the future.

It's simple while the 2 bolts are out of the top plate and bracket, slot the bracket bolt holes, so next time you do the job you only need to loosen bolts and slide bracket out, nip bolts back up till you need to put the bracket back on, Regards Frank.

Put a jack under the swivel housing and take the weight when you remove the top pin. Pat
