88 would be 10 spline
Are all these the same? I need ( I think - yet to strip it down) one for an 85 County & would think they are all the same? IE Disco, Rangie?
I can get a whole Rangie front end pretty cheap, would I be able to swap out the housing & put back the county hubs from the flanges ie replace centre housing incl diff? - Would save some time that way, but I think an '88 Rangie wouldn't be 24 spline ? ( mine is)
Thanks, David
88 would be 10 spline
The County swivel's flange has an extra bolt to the Rangie counterpart, so it isn't just a bolt up housing swap. You can swap the diff carrier between housings as far as I know, pretty sure even a Series Rover diff will swap without problem.
Around 86-87 the rangie front end changed to 7 bolt swivels. The extra bolt was put in at the bottom to strengthen the joint to the axle housing. All 7 bolt housings and swivels will interchange. Discos had wider radius arms at the diff and the large radius to chassis bush. Later rangie classics had the same radius arms. I have disco housing with the wider bushes in the front of my county.
There was also an increase in panhard bush size.
Rangie has different calipers than county.
All rover pattern diffs are interchanchable with correct axles, as 24 and 10 splines aren't interchangeable
I'll report back as I've now bought it. I will remove the diff to check it possibly tonight. The bloke I bought it off had no hoist or trolley & we had to move it about 50 metres. I reckon it weighs at least 160kg. had to lift & drop 6"a time. I'm getting too old for this crap !! I hope a 1988 Rangie inner tube will fit an 89 County/ Perentie.
I took a punt & bought the Perentie sight unseen. Its hit a rock so hard its dented the housing which has dislodged the front crown wheel. The service book says fit new pinion seal. They kept diving it till the crown wheel parted from the diff housing. Nice mess, no bolts, just paste..
Cheers, David
It beats me why the army never fitted a front diff guard to the Perenties, particularly given that they saw fit to upgrade the track link. It doesn't take much of a hit to do this type of damage to a rover diff.

The interest is purely for perverse curiosity reasons. Big difference between a multiple shear failure vs what? crush?
